I'd already read some of the major articles which had come out about this situation, and if the book had just been a re-hash pf the media coverage I'd have found it difficult to sustain interest, but it was actually an eye opener in being so deeply well-informed about the Uyghurs and their history both in Xinjiang and in the diaspora, about how it was possible to implement a process of extraordinarily harsh repression against a whole ethnic group using the "Great War Against Terror" as a cover. Careful, facts-based analysis builds up convincing case for calling this cultural genocide.

This book contains a brief history of the Uyghurs from the annexation of their homeland by China in 1759 to the present day, with a focus on the turbulent relationship between the Uyghurs and the Chinese authorities in recent years.
The book is interesting and informative in its factual accounts of the events, although in many places (especially with respect to what actually happened in China), 'details are not available' or 'one could only assume...' as the author was barred from China after 2000. Understandably all specifics from the Chinese source are treated with suspicion.
The main thrust of the first half of the book is an attempt to convince non-Chinese readers that the Uyghur militants do not represent a global terrorist threat as their chance and limited participation in the global Islamic jihad in Afghanistan and Syria is primarily to train as freedom fighters against China. Further more, the author argues that China should not consider the plethora of violent and deadly attacks against its security forces or government officials ‘terrorism’ because his own definition only concerns attacks against civilians. When civilians were killed or injured, the violence was assumed to have been prompted by a legitimate desire to vent one’s grievance instead of being politically motivated. No doubt rational readers would have their own interpretations based on facts or suspend judgment where there is insufficient evidence.
In the second half of the book, the author describes and condemns the assimilation (‘cultural genocide’) attempted and accelerated by the Chinese government in recent years. The author believes that the Uyghurs should be allowed to declare independence (‘self determination’) instead of being assimilated. Let’s inspect this conceptually first. Take the US for example, all settlers from Europe, Africa, Latin America, and Asia effectively assimilated to form an English-speaking people who identify themselves first and foremost as Americans or US citizens and can expect to participate in the nation-wide economic activities freely. While many of them no longer speak the language of their ancestors, many aspects of their respective cultural traditions survived. The only exception relates to the native Americans who were segregated into pockets of reservations (without the prospect of independence though) and many of whom remain impoverished and discriminated against to this day.
To the rural Uyghurs whose life has not changed from predominantly subsistence farming in the last millennium (except that the population quadrupled in the last 70 years), it can be unquestionably daunting that 4-lane highways, modern apartment buildings, and factories are popping up, spoiling the traditional landscape. However, the international community should refrain from shutting down such initiatives before ascertaining whether the Uyghurs are actually benefiting from all these as maintained by Chinese authorities.
