Based on living and traveling in Iran for an extended time under the Shah, speaking passable Persian, and visiting for 10 days in 2011, I found two kinds of things in this book: Things I know are correct; and things that ring true, which I wish I had known. I had a couple of little nit-picky disagreements with the text, but this may simply be that I lived in different places or travelled in different circles.


Another commenter suggested this book missed a little on politics. I can't speak to that.

그러나 이 책에는 분명한 한계도 있다. 첫째, <Culture Smart!> 시리즈의 성격상 깊은 역사 분석이나 정치경제 분석은 약하다. 이란의 계급 격차, 지방과 수도의 차이, 소수민족 문제, 국가폭력, 제재경제, 혁명수비대의 경제권력, 디아스포라와 국내 사회의 긴장은 제한적으로만 다루어질 수밖에 없다. 둘째, 2016년판이라는 시기적 한계가 크다. 2016년은 핵합의 이후 이란이 상대적으로 개방될 수 있다는 기대가 남아 있던 시기다. 하지만 2026년 현재 호주 정부는 이란에 대해 “여행하지 말라”는 수준의 경고와 함께, 이란 내 영사 지원 능력이 매우 제한적이라고 알리고 있다. 그러므로 이 책을 지금 여행 실용서로 그대로 쓰는 것은 위험하다.

셋째, 이 책은 이란인의 따뜻함과 세련됨을 강조함으로써 서구의 적대적 고정관념을 교정하는 장점이 있지만, 때로는 국가권력의 폭력성을 문화적 복잡성 속에 희석시킬 위험도 있다. “사람들은 친절하다”는 말은 사실일 수 있다. 그러나 그것만으로 “사회는 괜찮다”고 말할 수는 없다. 이란 사회의 아름다움과 이란 국가의 억압성은 동시에 보아야 한다. 바로 그 긴장이 오늘날 이란 이해의 핵심이다.

전체적으로 이 책은 이란 입문서로 유용하다. 특히 이란을 처음 접하는 독자에게 “이란인”과 “이란 정권”을 구별하게 해 준다는 점에서 가치가 있다. 이란은 반미 구호와 핵 문제만의 나라가 아니다. 페르시아 문학, 가족주의, 시아적 애도문화, 도시적 세련미, 강한 교육열, 극진한 환대, 복잡한 체면 문화가 얽힌 사회다. 그러나 동시에 이란은 여성의 신체, 시민의 자유, 정치적 반대, 소수자의 권리를 국가가 강하게 통제하는 사회이기도 하다.

따라서 이 책의 가장 좋은 독법은 <문화적 해명>과 <정치적 비판>을 함께 붙드는 것이다. Williams의 책은 이란을 미워하지 않도록 도와준다. 그러나 오늘의 독자는 거기서 멈추면 안 된다. 이란인을 이해하는 일은 이란 국가권력을 변호하는 일이 아니며, 이란 국가를 비판하는 일도 이란 문명과 사람들을 혐오하는 일이 아니다. 이 책은 바로 그 구별을 시작하게 해 주는 작고 유용한 안내서다.
