Maryam Kamali's memoir vividly depicts her life journey from a small town in Iran, after the 1979 revolution cast the dark shadow of the Islamic Republic regime over the country. It illuminates how darkness keeps people away from the light, from home to society, and from school to university. Iran's people move from one dark room to another as hardliners and reformists exchange power.
The narrator pursues small lights from her hometown to big cities and the capital, then sets foot on the path to immigration to the USA. Her description of schools in small villages, large cities, and universities offers a comparative view of the educational systems in Iran and the USA. Through history, literature, and culture, she uncovers the source of the light that takes on the colors of the lion and sun flag.
An Iranian Woman Passing Through the Age of Darkness sheds a ray of light on the everyday lives of Iranian people who seek to live in peace and prosperity with the world, yet whose voices are silenced.

I truly enjoyed reading this moving memoir, An Iranian Woman Passing Through the Age of Darkness. It opened a genuine, original window onto Iran after the 1979 revolution. The author’s beautiful, descriptive language, her expertise in writing, and her knowledge of history helped me gain a better perspective on what has happened in Iran during these decades and how people have learned from history. The author provides multi-layered perspectives on Iran, including its culture, history, society, politics, and even family life. Through the author’s narration, I could travel throughout Iran and even learn about its educational system. What I really loved and kept me reading even after the book finished were the songs and poems, including:

How sadly the journey parted my hand

From all that warmth coming from you!...

Strongly recommend reading this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A moving exploration of post revolutionary Iran

I loved this book! A very personal view of the author’s childhood and young adulthood spent navigating the repressive education system of post revolutionary Iran. As a student of history she was able to explore different regions and historic sites which come alive through her descriptions. Daily and family life is chronicled, always overshadowed by the darkness of the regime.

If you want an authentic view of Iran over the past four decades, read this book! The language is so beautiful and scenic! She writes so beautifully that sometimes it becomes poetry! I started to love the Persian language because of this book, and I became more curious about poets like Ferdowsi, the author of the Shahnameh, and singers such as Hayedeh and Fereydun Farokhzad. I enjoyed how the author writes from her heart and honestly about her country and its people, seeking light amid the darkness of the Islamic Republic.
This book isn’t just a memoir; it also serves as a history of the regime’s political and ideological thoughts, as well as the Iranian people's uprisings, which, as the author writes, “take on the colors of the lion and sun flag.”
