Revolutionary Iran: A History of the Islamic Republic
by Michael Axworthy (Author) Format: Paperback
4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars (298)
A new edition of the definitive history of revolutionary Iran, essential for understanding the country today
For some 40 years the Islamic Republic has resisted widespread condemnation, sanctions, and sustained attacks by Iraq in an eight-year war. Many policy-makers today share a weary wish that Iran would somehow just disappear as a problem. But with Iran's continuing commitment to a nuclear programme and its reputation as a trouble-maker in Syria, Afghanistan, Lebanon and elsewhere, this is unlikely any time soon. An unending stream of assertions about the revolution's finally running down continue to be defied by events, and Iran's institutions are still formidable.
This is the definitive history of this subject, from one of the world's principal experts.

Sehr empfehlenswert.

this book is very complete about Iran and its history since the Revolution in 1979. The beginning starts with a short history of Iran and after Axworthy writes about the revolution during a large part of the book. Then, he finishes with Ahmadinejad and the election of this year.

This book is its weight worth in gold for anybody who wants to understand the circumstances which lead to the 1979 revolution in Iran.
The author starts off by highlighting the geopolitical scenario of the country in he beginning of the twentieth century. Britain & Russiam interests which bifurcated the country on the lines of communist & capitalist propoganda, while completely neglecting the local sentiments of an Islamic hinterland.
The book moves ahead highlighting the main actors to play an important; namely, the religious leaders, the political dissidents, student protests, the monarchy, discontent among the citizens, the oil cartels, etc. It's like a racy thriller which will keep the reader occupied right until the end.
Definitely an insightful read.
