P. 31~32 팔레스타인의 현재 상황을 설명할 때, 사람들은 흔히 ‘분쟁’이라고 부른다. 즉 서로 동등하지는 않지만 두 당사자 사이의 분쟁이며, 땅과 자원을 둘러싼 분쟁이고, 정체성과 깊이 연결된 성지를 둘러싼 분쟁이며, 더 나아가 식민자와 피식민자 사이의 분쟁이라고 말한다. 이것이 언론과 학계 그리고 대중적 논쟁에서 사용되는 지배적인 패러다임이다. 오늘날에도 이 패러다임은 현재 상황을 이스라엘과 하마스 사이의 분쟁으로 설명하는 데 사용되고 있다. 이러한 전제에 기초하여 국제사회는 이 ‘분쟁’을 해결하려 하거나, 최소한 관리하려고 시도해 왔으나 지금까지 아무런 성공을 거두지 못했다. 잘못된 전제들은 상황을 더욱 악화시키는 결과를 낳았고, 오늘 우리가 목격하고 있는 참담한 결과로 이어졌다.

이 책을 번역한 직후, 미국과 이스라엘의 이란 공격으로 중동 전쟁이 다시 촉발되었다.

팔레스타인에 대한 미국 기독교의 정체성을 일러 ‘기독교 시온주의’(Christian Zionism) 라 한다. 팔레스타인-이스라엘을 바라보는 그 입장은 한국 보수 개신교도 마찬가지이다. 그들의 입장도 기독교시오니즘이라 할 수 있다.
오랜 세월 주류 언론과 학계는 팔레스타인 잔혹사를 이스라엘과 하마스 간의 ‘분쟁’ 혹은 ‘점령’이라는 패러다임으로 규정했다. 그러나 동등한 당사자 사이의 자원 다툼으로 오도하는 이러한 프레임은 국제사회의 구조적 관리 실패를 낳았을 뿐이다.
지난 100년 동안 전개된 사태의 본질은 단순한 분쟁이 아니다. 철저히 기획된 ‘정착민 식민주의’ 프로젝트이다. 미국의 기독교 시온주의자들은 보수적 가치 회복과 세속주의 저지라는 국내 정치적 목적을 위해 이스라엘을 유용한 도구로 전유했다. 제국의 묵인 아래 ‘선택된 백성’이라는 신앙의 진술은 타자의 영토를 수탈할 자격을 부여하는 배타적 이데올로기로 왜곡되었다.

A Palestinian Christian in Bethlehem, Dr. Mitri Raheb is President of Diyar Consortium and of Dar al-Kalima University College in Bethlehem, and also serves as president of the Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land, and Senior Pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Christmas Church in Bethlehem, Palestine. Dr. Raheb is the author of 16 books including, I Am a Palestinian Christian, Bethlehem Besieged, and Faith in the Face of Empire. He is the Chief Editor of the Contextual Theology Series at Diyar Publishing including: The Invention of History: A Century of Interplay between Theology and Politics in Palestine; The Biblical Text in the Context of Occupation: Towards a New Hermeneutics of Liberation. His writings have been translated into eleven languages.
In 2003 Dr. Raheb received the prestigious Wittenberg Award from the Luther Center in Washington, DC, for his ‘distinguished service to church and society.’ Other awards include the International Mohammad Nafi Tschelebi Peace Award of the Central Islam Archive, as well as the German Peace Award of Aachen. A Palestinian Christian in Bethlehem, Dr. Mitri Raheb is President of Diyar Consortium and of Dar al-Kalima University College in Bethlehem, and also serves as president of the Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land, and Senior Pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Christmas Church in Bethlehem, Palestine. Dr. Raheb is the author of 16 books including, I Am a Palestinian Christian, Bethlehem Besieged, and Faith in the Face of Empire. He is the Chief Editor of the Contextual Theology Series at Diyar Publishing including: The Invention of History: A Century of Interplay between Theology and Politics in Palestine; The Biblical Text in the Context of Occupation: Towards a New Hermeneutics of Liberation. His writings have been translated into eleven languages.
In 2003 Dr. Raheb received the prestigious Wittenberg Award from the Luther Center in Washington, DC, for his ‘distinguished service to church and society.’ Other awards include the International Mohammad Nafi Tschelebi Peace Award of the Central Islam Archive, as well as the German Peace Award of Aachen. In 2012 the German Media Prize, generally granted to heads of state, was awarded to Dr. Raheb for his “tireless work in creating room for hope for his people, who are living under Israeli Occupation, through founding and building institutions of excellence in education, culture and health.”
The work of Dr. Raheb has received wide media attention from major international media outlets and networks including CNN, ABC, CBS, 60 Minutes, BBC, ARD, ZDF, DW, BR, Premiere, Raiuno, Stern, The Economist, Newsweek, and Vanity Fair.

I always have to brush up on my theological vocabulary in Reverend Mitri's books, (me being an engineer by training) but he makes some compelling arguments based on a very thorough knowledge of history and the Bible about the underlying causes of the ongoing tragedy. His advocacy for non-violent, creative resistance to obvious repression and prejudice I believe is the only sustainable course to achieve peace. He has a unique perspective as a Christian pastor, a Palestinian by birth and lineage, and from the Arab culture. My hope is that new leadership will emerge on all sides in the ongoing conflict to embrace honest negotiation and abandonment of violence.
