(92)Part of: Princeton Studies in Muslim Politics (42 books)The first account of one of the world’s most pressing humanitarian catastrophes.
This eye-opening book reveals how China has used the US-led Global War on Terror as cover for its increasingly brutal suppression of the Uyghur people. China’s actions, it argues, have emboldened states around the globe to persecute ethnic minorities and severely repress domestic opposition in the name of combatting terrorism.
Within weeks of the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington, the Chinese government announced that it faced a serious terrorist threat from its largely Muslim Uyghur ethnic minority. Nearly two decades later, of the 11 million Uyghurs living in China today, more than 1 million have been detained in so-called re-education camps, victims of what has become the largest program of mass incarceration and surveillance in the world.
Drawing on extensive interviews with Uyghurs in Xinjiang, as well as refugee communities and exiles, Sean Roberts tells a story that is not just about state policies, but about Uyghur responses to these devastating government programs.
Providing a lucid and far-reaching analysis of China’s cultural genocide, The War on the Uyghurs allows the voices of those caught up in the human tragedy to be heard for the first time.==

Author examines the horrifying reality of oppression and genocidal policy of Chinese communist state in occupied Uyghurland- East Turkistan. Even though China put more than 3-5 million Uyghurs into concentration camps and killed hundreds of thousands by torture and sterilization policies, the world still don’t know much about Uyghur tragedy under the Chinese brutal dictatorship since the occupation of their homeland in 1949. Author in many ways provides clear evidence and draws a picture of how Uyghurs suffered and suffocated without a basic freedom to speak their language, learn their history and literature in schools and at home, believe in their religion, keep their culture and own their thousands of years old legacy in their ancestral homeland. Chinese communists often accuse Uyghurs of extremism and don’t allow any outside media to investigate and prove their allegations, Chinese kept destroying the Uyghur nation, stealing everything that land produce while keeping the Uyghurs in poverty and exclude them from anything Chinese migrants benefit. Author in many ways sheds light on the heinous crimes that Chinese committed against Uyghurs and their false accusations of Uyghurs after 9/11 just to completely exterminate Uyghurs under the name of global terror. Thank you so much for giving a fair explanation of the causes of Uyghur genocide and the real motive of Chinese communist state in East Turkistan-Uyghur homeland.

THIS BOOK IS VERY READABLE AND MAKES THE FACTS AND REALITY CLEAR. THE ONLY DRAWBACK WHICH THE AUTHOR COULD NOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IS THAT THERE IS LITTLE FACTUAL INFORMATION FOR THE LAST FIVE YEARS. BUT WESTERN JOURNALISTS HAVE BEEN BANNED FROM THE AREA, SO THE AUTHOR HAD TO RELY ON OTHER SOURCES THAT WERE NON-VERIFIABLE FOR THAT PERIOD. IMPORTANTLY, HE PROVIDES GOOD DETAIL ON THE PROVOCATIONS THAT LED THE CHINESE GOVERNMENT TO IMPOSE THEIR SOLUTIONS. THEY ARE OF COURSE OVERKILL, BUT IT IS TYPICAL OF THE XI ADMINISTRATION TO EVENTUALLY LOSE PATIENCE AND IMPOSE A DRACONIAN SERIES OF STEPS TO SOLVE POTENTIAL HUMILIATIONS TO HIS GOVERNMENT (TIBET, Hong Kong).

I'd already read some of the major articles which had come out about this situation, and if the book had just been a re-hash pf the media coverage I'd have found it difficult to sustain interest, but it was actually an eye opener in being so deeply well-informed about the Uyghurs and their history both in Xinjiang and in the diaspora, about how it was possible to implement a process of extraordinarily harsh repression against a whole ethnic group using the "Great War Against Terror" as a cover. Careful, facts-based analysis builds up convincing case for calling this cultural genocide.

If you are interested in an up-to-date take on the plight of the Uighurs, this is an excellent book. There only appear to be 4 or 5 books published that include a historic overview and a framework for the current issues. This book is good in all areas. After having skimmed through the other available books on Amazon, this was the only one that I kept to read from start to finish and leave in our book shelf.

3.0 out of 5 stars 'One man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter.'
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 October 2020
Format: KindleVerified Purchase
This book contains a brief history of the Uyghurs from the annexation of their homeland by China in 1759 to the present day, with a focus on the turbulent relationship between the Uyghurs and the Chinese authorities in recent years.
The book is interesting and informative in its factual accounts of the events, although in many places (especially with respect to what actually happened in China), 'details are not available' or 'one could only assume...' as the author was barred from China after 2000. Understandably all specifics from the Chinese source are treated with suspicion.
The main thrust of the first half of the book is an attempt to convince non-Chinese readers that the Uyghur militants do not represent a global terrorist threat as their chance and limited participation in the global Islamic jihad in Afghanistan and Syria is primarily to train as freedom fighters against China. Further more, the author argues that China should not consider the plethora of violent and deadly attacks against its security forces or government officials ‘terrorism’ because his own definition only concerns attacks against civilians. When civilians were killed or injured, the violence was assumed to have been prompted by a legitimate desire to vent one’s grievance instead of being politically motivated. No doubt rational readers would have their own interpretations based on facts or suspend judgment where there is insufficient evidence.
In the second half of the book, the author describes and condemns the assimilation (‘cultural genocide’) attempted and accelerated by the Chinese government in recent years. The author believes that the Uyghurs should be allowed to declare independence (‘self determination’) instead of being assimilated. Let’s inspect this conceptually first. Take the US for example, all settlers from Europe, Africa, Latin America, and Asia effectively assimilated to form an English-speaking people who identify themselves first and foremost as Americans or US citizens and can expect to participate in the nation-wide economic activities freely. While many of them no longer speak the language of their ancestors, many aspects of their respective cultural traditions survived. The only exception relates to the native Americans who were segregated into pockets of reservations (without the prospect of independence though) and many of whom remain impoverished and discriminated against to this day.
To the rural Uyghurs whose life has not changed from predominantly subsistence farming in the last millennium (except that the population quadrupled in the last 70 years), it can be unquestionably daunting that 4-lane highways, modern apartment buildings, and factories are popping up, spoiling the traditional landscape. However, the international community should refrain from shutting down such initiatives before ascertaining whether the Uyghurs are actually benefiting from all these as maintained by Chinese authorities.

세진님, 요청하신 숀 R. 로버츠(Sean R. Roberts)의 <위구르족과의 전쟁>(The War on the Uyghurs: China's campaign against Xinjiang's Muslims)에 대한 요약 및 평론입니다.
