Robert Fisk was an English writer and journalist. As Middle East correspondent of The Independent, he has primarily been based in Beirut for more than 30 years. He has published a number of books and has reported on the United States'war in Afghanistan and its 2003 invasion of Iraq. Fisk holds more British and International Journalism awards than any other foreign correspondent. The New York Times once described Robert Fisk as "probably the most famous foreign correspondent in Britain.
Fisk has said that journalism must "challenge authority, all authority, especially so when governments and politicians take us to war." He is a pacifist and has never voted.

I am a 19 year-old Lebanese university student. I was born in 1996, the year Israel massacred civilians in the village of Qana. I carry Beirut with me on my passport wherever I go. Lebanon is the country I was born and raised in, the country of my father and his ancestors. Yet, like all my peers, I graduated high school with a profound ignorance of my country’s modern history. The events that tore Lebanon apart for decades ever since its independence in 1943 and the evacuation of the last french soldier in 1946 until the day I was born are blackened out from the collective conscience of our society.
Upon reading this book, this marvelous piece of historical non-fiction, I was amazed at the horror, the depravity of the Lebanese civil war. The gory battles whose deafening echoes still reverberate in our contemporary society are only smothered by censors terrified of pouring salt on open wounds. It is insane to think about it this way: Have I not had the curiosity of reading this bulky book, I would’ve stayed oblivious of the appalling history of my fatherland. The Beirut streets, which Fisk describes with such vivacity, are the same streets I spent my childhood in, yet this foreigner seems to know them more than I do. How disgraceful it is to learn about your own country’s modern history through the words of a foreign correspondent. How disgraceful it is to trust his version of the story more than your fellow countrymen’s because you’re sure of their biasedness. How shameful it is for me to be oblivious of these important facts when my own father fought on those same frontlines Fisk so ingeniously wrote of.
I am personally indebted to Mr. Robert Fisk for his dedicated first-hand reporting of the Lebanese civil war, for risking his life countless times for the sake of honest journalism, especially when all the parties (Israel, Syria, the PLO, the Phalange, the United States) without exception never ceased to distort reality as if the stories of the war were plunged in a deep well of Orwellian purgative waters.
It is quite astounding that accounts of the civil war aren’t taught in classrooms, but understandably so, because the same warlords who terrorized, slaughtered, plundered, raped and prevaricated 30 years ago, are still wearing suits and holding an (apparently permanent but definitely illegitimate) seat in our Lebanese parliament today.
As if reading about how foreign armies and guerrillas so insolently destroyed my country wasn’t enough, I had to read about how Lebanese people themselves slaughtered each other in cold blood, how Lebanese leaders so worshipped by their followers to THIS DAY antagonized each other and gave military orders which have inevitably ended in human carnage.
It is no surprise factious tensions still arise today and the country is constantly on the verge of the outbreak of violence, that’s all because the scars of the civil war are still branded in our society and people are still embittered. My own parents and many people I know still use “east” and “west” Beirut as if the war never really ended.

لا توجد كلمة يمكنها أنه تعبر عن شعوري بعد الانتهاء من هذا الكتاب سوى كلمة (آه) مع تنهد طويل وعميق
ترك هذا الكتاب في نفسي أثراً كبيراً لن يمحى ... علمني الكثير .. وقدم لي الكثير
إنه أكثر من مجرد تاريخ ... أكثر من مجرد توثيق صحفي لويلات وطن ... إنه دروسٌ في الإنسانية ... وكشفٌ للستار عن الجانب الوحشي والمظلم من الإنسان
علمني "ويلات وطن" أن الجريمة لا تختلف باختلاف حجمها ... إن من قتل إنساناً كمن قتل ألفاً ...
تذكرت قوله تعالى :
مِنْ أَجْلِ ذَلِكَ كَتَبْنَا عَلَى بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ أَنَّهُ مَن قَتَلَ نَفْساً بِغَيْرِ نَفْسٍ أَوْ فَسَادٍ فِي الأَرْضِ فَكَأَنَّمَا قَتَلَ النَّاسَ جَمِيعاً
لماذا ؟
لأن الإنسان لا يقتل إنساناً بريئاً إلا حين ينطفئ نور الرحمة والإنسانية في قلبه
حينها ... لن يجد فرقاً في قتل آخر وعشرة آخرين ومائة وألف
إنه لم يعد إنساناً ... لقد أصبح وحشاً
في هذا الكتاب ... عرفت كيف تغسل السياسة عقول المحاربين ... عرفت كيف يدمر أبناء الوطن وطنهم لا لشيء أبداً
كيف تعمى قلوبهم والأبصار ... ولا يدركون أبواب السعادة التي يغلقونها بأيديهم ... باباً إثر باب
ماذا جرى لك إيها الإنسان !! كيف أصبحت هكذا !! أين فطرة الله وروحه التي نفخها فيك
ما الذي جعل منك آلة قتل بتلك الوحشية والهمجية !

قرأتها بتلهف ... أتعب الكتاب قلبي ... وأرهق عينيّ ... ولكنني كنت أقرأ بتلهف
شكراً لروبرت فيسك ... لا أجد كلمةً توفيه حقه ... حين يقتحم الموت ويسير تحت نيران القصف والمدافع ويواجه خطر الموت والاختطاف لينقل مأساة شعب تآمر عليه العالم بأسره
شعب لبنان نموذج ... لشعوب عربية كثيرة
عرفت في هذا الكتاب قذارة السياسة وقذارة أهلها ...
عرفت معنى المجازر ...
قادني إلى أعماق الإنسان ووضعني أمام المشاعر الإنسانية عاريةً من كل تشويه
وأتساءل ... هل كتب الله على أرضنا هذه أن تعيش أسيرة الحزن والآلام!
هل سيأتي يومٌ نعرف فيه طعم السلام الحقيقي والطمأنينة ؟
سأبقى مستيقظاً .... أرقب الليل كما فعل فيسك ... حتى يبزغ الفجر مجدداً

في التعرّف على بعض المآسي معاناة؛ لكنها معاناة لابدّ منها، ولا فِرار..
وآن لي التعرف على أبعاد صراع لم أقرأ عنه من قبل إلا شذرًا.
أهناك علاقة بين أوشفيتز بولونيا وما شاهده روبرت فيسك في بيروت؟
علاقة دعته لسير خطاه بأوشفيتز بولونيا ورسمها لنا أولًا في فصل الكتاب الأوّل!
أهي علاقة أم هي مفتاح الحل كما سمّاها هو!
وهل نسخة من مفتاح الحل ذاك ارتبط بفلسطين أيضًا ليتابع خطاه بعدها في حكايا استلاب أرضها من أهلها بالفصل الثاني؟
وبالنسبة لي كـ قارئة تجهل تقريبًا كل شيء عن الشأن اللبناني قديمه وحديثه؛
فقد وجدت أن تسارع تحليلات روبرت فيسك بالفصل الثالث وتسارع عرضه للأحداث والحكم عليها؛
وجدته أمر غير مريح بل وفقدتُ الاستيعاب بأكثر ما يقول؛
لذا اتّجهتُ للاستماع لقائمة مقاطع فيديو لوثائقيّ الحرب الأهلية اللبنانية
رغم ما آذاني فيها من موسيقى وبعض الصور العارضة غير اللائقة.

أختلف مع روبرت فيسك في رأيه أنّ حافظ الأسد وطني وأي معارضة له تعتبر خيانة للشعب السوري؛
ليس فقط لأنّ استدلاله بالحفاظ على الاستقرار بسوريا لا يعتبر دليل على وطنيته؛
فكم سقطت من أقنعة بالسنوات السابقة جعلتنا ندرك كم كان تحت السطح العام للمجتمعات العربية من براكين تغلي،
وآلام تعتصرها قلوب فئات محددة من الشعب، وخيانات مخبأة.
وإنما بسبب قراءاتي لمذكرات سجناء عانوا في معتقلات الأسد، وأهمهم بالطبع مذكرات البراء
من تدمر إلى هارفارد
واسألوا معتقلي تدمر يخبرونكم عن حكم الأسد ووطنيته!

مشكلة الكتاب الوحيدة أنه لا ينبغي أن يكون قراءتك الأولى عن حرب لبنان و إلا لما فهمت العديد من التفاصيل .. لو اطلعت قبله على برنامج الجزيرة الوثائقي عن الحرب أو كان لك اطلاع مسبق فذلك أفضل ، أيضا الكتاب استمر في ذكر أحداث الحرب حتى 1984 تقريبا و ما بعد ذلك كان جميعه عن اختطاف و حرية صديقه لينهي الكتاب بفصل جيد نوعا ما عن انتهاء الحرب ، المشكلة الأخرى هي ليست مشكلة الكتاب .. هي مشكلة عالمنا المجنون الذي نعيش فيه و الذي ستنهي الكتاب و أنت مليئ بالحزن و الصدمة من أنك تعيش بين هؤلاء الوحوش و بأننا نغطي إنسانيتنا بذلك الغطاء الهش الذي يزول حينما يستثار الوحش الذي بداخلنا

عندما كنت أستمع للأغنية الساخرة (كلاشينكوف) لفيلمون وهبي :
كلاشكنوف وسيمينوف وديكتاريوف
وأبولور و دوني كلاون و برغانوف
كلون علقو عنا على الساحة عنا
أووف........ أوووف
أنا بكفرشيما قاعد يا حبيبي
وساند راسي علمساند يا حبيبي
وصار قواص
وضرب رصاص
قمنا تخبينا بالباص
لو ما تسطحنا على الأرض
كان اتصيدنا القناص
انقطعنا من الخوف

أو حين تستمع لأغنية يا زمان الطائفية لزياد الرحباني ، تدرك السخرية من تاريخ وواقع مرت به لبنان في النصف الثاني من القرن العشرين ، وما أشبه اليوم بالأمس ، تتغيرالجغرافيا وتستمر المأساة
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
قبل سنوات دار حوار بيني وبين صديق عربي حول حرب لبنان ، فأخذ يكيل الشتائم لفلسطينيي لبنان ولمنظمة التحرير فقط دون سواهم فسألته : ما مدى معرفتك عن حرب لبنان ؟؟؟؟
فأجاب : أنه شاهد الفيلم السينمائي بيروت الغربية
ضحكت حينها ضحكة منطوية على سخرية وقهر ، فمصدر معلوماته عن حرب بهذا التعقيد هو فيلم سينمائي لا يخلو من البذاءة ويحاول أن يصور أن اللبنانيين لا يتحدون إلا في بيوت الدعارة ..... مهزلة ... وما تقرؤه من تعليقات على الوثائقيات المتعلقة بالحرب اللبنانية تدرك مدى الجهل التاريخي للأحداث وما حصل في تلك الفترة فيحاكموا تاريخهم لواقعهم وليس العكس !!!!! ..... أخخخخخخخخخخخخخخخ .... من وعينا التاريخي كم هو بائس .

سوف أنجرف مع العاطفة وأكتب بابتذال :
هي ويلات أمة .......
ويلات لبنان ، ويلات فلسطين وويلات سوريا هي ويلات الإنسانية ،
رحلة طويلة في ثنايا الكتاب وبين صفحاته المنتقعة بالدم و الفائحة برائحة الجثث المتحللة ورائحة البارود ، تقرأ عن الحرب وتعيش أحداثها ، تجري مع المقاتلين والصحافيين ولاجئي الحرب في الأزقة ، تحتمي من القصف في زوايا وبنايات المدن اللبنانية ، تحفظ جغرافيا لبنان لأن في كل زاوية وفي كل ركن حدث أمر على قدر عالي من الأهمية ، تسمع دوي المدافع وأزيز الرصاص والقذائف فوق رأسك ، تقف خائفاً أمام حاجز عليه مقنع يحمل بلطة أو سكين في يده ..... يقشعر بدنك من الحاجز بناءً على كلمة في هويتك الشخصية في خانة الدين ، تزور المقابر الجماعية والمجازر المتعددد وساحات الإعدام والحرق والشنق والإغتصاب .
تدخل إلى غرف الموتى في المستشفيات حيث في براداتها تذوب الفروق و تضيع الهوية ولا ترى سوى الموت فالموت يا صديقي لا يفرق بين أحد بغض النظر عن العمر والهوية والدين والإتجاه السياسي فالموت يحصد الجميع .
ترافق الجيوش والقوات التي تدخل لبنان لإنقاذ شعبه أو بناء على طلب شعبه وترحيبه فتستقبل بالورود والأرز المنثور على الرؤوس كما هي العادة في لبنان وما تل��ث أن ترافق هذه الجيوش والقوات وهي تخرج في توابيت ملفوفة بالأعلام طبعاً هذا بالنسبة لمن يُقَدر جنوده ويعطي إعتاراً وقيمة لمقاتليه أو تبقى لتشاهد تحلل الجثث في المدرعات المدمرة وعلى أرصفة الطرقات أو تذهب لمخيمات من ترك ذويه بصدور عارية للذبح والإغتصاب والمجازر .
في لبنان إختفى الإنسان وأطل الحيوان من وراء الهضاب .................
هذا الجنون الذي يحول صديق الأمس إلى عدو اليوم يقاتلون في خندق واحد ثم يوجهون البنادق نحو بعضهم البعض تتشابك خطوط القتل والمجازر المتبادلة حتى يصبح من الصعب التفريق من عدو من ومن الذي قتل من !!!! فعند الحديث عن التحالفات في لبنان لابد من تحديد الساعة والدقيقة لأن الوضع أنذاك أخذ منحى جنوني بصورة لا يتخيلها العقل .
تسمع الإذاعات ودورها المنفر في تأجيج الصراع فلم يكفي في ذلك الوقت صوت المدافع والراجمات لتعكير أجواء لبنان ، فكان الصوت الإذاعي أو إن صح التعبير أثير الكراهية يصب الزيت على النار ، من يقرأ البيانات الإذاعية التي كانت تبث خلال الحرب يقشعر بدنه من الكلام والتعبيرات المتداولة في تلك الفترة .
(ههه على أساس أن الوضع تغير )
على أصداء أغنية لبيروت للسيدة فيروز تجول بين المتاريس ونقاط الإشتباك ......... تعيش حصار بيروت وكلمات محمود درويش في قصيدة مديح الظل العالي ترن في أذنيك ....... تذهب لجنوب لبنان وتعيش الفاجعة في الجنوب اللبناني المحتل على أصداء أغنية غابت شمس الحق لجوليا بطرس
هو لبنان الذي لا يفهم ، هو لبنان الذي لا يموت ، هو العقل اللبناني المعقد الذي لا تستطيع فهمه
هي بيروت الخيمة والنجمة
هي صبرا نزول الروح في حجر
هي قانا المذبحة
هي كلمات وهي ويلات أمة ......

بعيداً عن العاطفة :
ليت أن هذه الفترة لم تكن في التاريخ وليت هذا الكتاب لم يكن ولكن بما أن ما حدث قد حدث فهذا الكتاب من المراجع المهمة التي لابد من الإطلاع عليها :
📌هذا العمل ليس كتاباً سياسياً مباشراً ، وهنا نرى مراسل حربي يتحول إلى محلل سياسي ، محاولاً تحديد سبب حدوث الأمور التي كان شاهداً عليها فلا يكتفي بسرد الأحداث والوقائع ..... فهو استقصاء وبحث عن الأسباب والدوافع
📌من ليس لديه خلفية عن الحرب اللبنانية والقيادات وتفاصيل التاريخ العربي الحديث سوف يضيع بين ثنايا الكتاب وعلى الأغلب لن تكون استفادته من الكتاب سوى تذكيره بالبعد الإنساني دون الإستفادة من الجانب التاريخي .
لأن أتون الحرب اللبنانية المشتعل في واقع عالمي مضطرب في تلك الفترة حول لبنان بجغرافيته المتباينة ومساحته الصغيرة وتركيبه الطائفي المعقد إلى ساحة حرب بين القوى العالمية وأصبح اللبنانيون وسيلة في هذا الصراع .
📌مشكلة الكتاب في تناول الأحداث وأتراجع عن نقطة قلتها في السابق أن الكتاب يغطي كل شاردة وواردة فالجزء الأول من الكتاب وإن عبرنا بلغة الأرقام أي بعد عام 1985 شعرت ان تناوله للأحداث غير مترابط بشكل كبير وغير شامل .
فالكتاب مرجع مهم وليس شاملاً ......... من يريد الإطلاع على حرب لبنان بتسلسل تاريخي وشاهدات من عاصروا وشاهدوا وصنعوا هذه الحرب أنصحه بوثائقي حرب لبنان من 15 جزء كفيل بتقديم صورة ممتازة عن الحرب اللبنانية .
📌المقارنة التاريخية ومحاولة الحجاج بمنطق من وقع في حقه مجازر أكبر وأكثر عددا فهذا المنطق يحول الإنسان إلى مجرد أرقام ، ووسيلة في تحقيق المكاسب وكسب التعاطف ....... فكفى عبطا وامتهانا لقيمة الإنسان وهذه من أسمى أفكار الكتاب
مِنْ أَجْلِ ذَٰلِكَ كَتَبْنَا عَلَىٰ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ أَنَّهُ مَن قَتَلَ نَفْسًا بِغَيْرِ نَفْسٍ أَوْ فَسَادٍ فِي الْأَرْضِ فَكَأَنَّمَا قَتَلَ النَّاسَ جَمِيعًا وَمَنْ أَحْيَاهَا فَكَأَنَّمَا أَحْيَا النَّاسَ جَمِيعًا ۚ وَلَقَدْ جَاءَتْهُمْ رُسُلُنَا بِالْبَيِّنَاتِ ثُمَّ إِنَّ كَثِيرًا مِّنْهُم بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ فِي الْأَرْضِ لَمُسْرِفُونَ
📌لابد من شكر روبرت فيسك هذا المراسل الذي لم ينصاع لأحد ولم يصوغ تقاريره الإخبارية بناء على هوى جهة معينة أيا كانت ، جرأة كبيرة أن يستمر في متابعة تغطية حرب لبنان في ظل جنون الخطف الذي كان سائدا في تلك الفترة .
وكثرة الرسائل العدائية التي وجهت له من يهود وعرب فحين تفقد الثقة في الصحافة والإعلام تتفاجئ بمراسل يصون هذه المهنة ويحفظ قيمتها .
حرب حرقت البشر والحجر ، ونفس جنرالات الحرب هم الذين يحكمون لبنان اليوم ، قاتل ومجرم حرب يصبح رئيساً أو وزيراً أو نائباً في دولة أذاق شعبها الويلات ،
رجاءً يا من لم تشهد حرباً لتعرف ما تسببه بعض الأفكار والأقوال من أثر وأنت تجلس في صالونك المكيف ضاماً الوسيلة التي تبث بها سمومك بين الناس .... إقرأ التاريخ !!!!!
فلابد من تعلم أخطاء الماضي وتعزيز الوعي التاريخي
فالشعب الذي لا يعرف تاريخه هو شعب بلا ذاكرة ...........

أعظم عمل وكتاب أقرؤه في حياتي كلها بلا مبالغة , الصحفي روبرت فيسك العامل لحساب جريدة التايمز اللندنية ومن بعدها الإندبندت عاش في لبنان أكثر من 15 عشرة سنة ليرصد الصراعات هناك ويرسل تقاريره كصحفي .. الكتاب جاء بالنسبة إلي كمعلم عن أشياء كثيرة أجهلها في أمور السياسة بشكل عام وفي صراعات الشرق الأوسط بشكل خاص , وجاء كصدمة كبيرة لي عندما قرأت إلى أي حد يمكن للإنسان فيه أن يغدو متوحشاً !
جاء في الكتاب وصفاً مفصلاً لمجزرتي صبرا وشاتيلا ومجزرة قانا مع تحليلات مفصلة لكل سبب ونتيجة , في مراحل وصف المجازر انتابتني نوبة كبيرة من البكاء العقلي الذي ترجم إلى دمعات قليلة حائرة .. يا إلهي ماذا يحدث على سطح الأرض ؟!! يا إلهي كم تعاني منطقتنا وكم يُعذَّب إنسان منطقتنا وكم يعذب بعضه بعضاً !
أنا الآن وبعد قراءتي للكتاب معجبة جداً بالصحفي فيسك .. معجبة جداً لدرجة أني أود مقابلته فعلاً .. هنا على أرض سوريا ! كم أتمنى وجوده هنا ليرصد بدقته وحياديته وإنسانيته ما يجري حقاً .. روبرت فيسك كان لديه شغف اسمه لبنان وكان لديه شغف اسمه العمل الصحفي فحماه شغفه هذا ومده بعمر استطاع فيه تقديم تحفته هذه التي توجت نهاية إقامته في لبنان ..
هذا الكتاب أكبر معلم أيها السادة وأكبر دليل على " حيونة " الإنسان واعذروني على هذا التعبير .. كتاب يستحق يستحق يستحق القراءة والتأمل ..

Everything considered, I'd say I prefer Patrick Cockburn as a guide to imperial aggression and sectarian violence in the Middle East. Cockburn has ice in veins; Fisk is of a more literary bent. At times merely orotund. The Age of Jihad: Islamic State and the Great War for the Middle East is a better explanation of Syria and Iraq in the 2000s and '10s than Pity the Nation is of Lebanon in the 1980s. Fisk allows himself to get waylaid by rhetoric and tangents where Cockburn never would.
Still, one must feel awe before the things Robert Fisk has seen that he can't unsee. Impossible to ever fully wash the stench of cadavers at Sabra and Chatila from one's body. I think it's fair to say that, by reporting candidly on Israeli war crimes for a major paper, he himself was making history.
If there was any comfort to be had after the Israeli massacre of innocents on 5/14 this year, it was that now public opinion just had to shift. At long last, once and for all, hadn't Israel truly made itself indefensible?
Well, in this respect Pity the Nation makes for sober reading. In the annals of atrocities, the massacre at Sabra and Chatila was about as indefensible as they come, and yet, in the three and a half decades since, hacks and ideologues have never ceased defending Israel. Indeed Ariel Sharon would go on to become prime minister and be fulsomely eulogized by Joe Biden. To recap: in '82 the PLO reached a ceasefire agreement with the state of Israel. PLO fighters would leave Lebanon for Tunisia, with the understanding that their families would be safe and protected. In response, Ariel Sharon sent an Israel-aligned militia into the refugee camps of Sabra and Chatila to slaughter the remaining Palestinians. Thousands were killed, mostly women, children and old men.
All this was reported at the time. A good part of this book consists of Fisk responding to those who tried to slander him for telling the truth in the eighties. The truth is that he's an unfailingly even-handed reporter. These pages include a highly unflattering portrait of Arafat, plus frequent condemnations of the PLO for its role in starting the conflict. In this respect, actually, I would say Fisk underrates Israel's culpability. Since the publication of this book, new information has come out. At the time of writing this, Fisk could not have known about the massive terrorist car bombing campaign Israel conducted for years before invading Lebanon. In no way can Israel's invasion be understood as a disproportionate response to valid security concerns; in fact Israel had been trying hard for years to provoke a response from the PLO that would justify a full scale invasion. This book was an astonishing read. It was assigned to me as research for a play I'm assistant-directing about the conflict in Lebanon and its effect on a family, but I found it to be eye-opening in a way that fiction could never be. Fisk's love for Lebanon as a country is as strong as his descriptions of the harrowing events surrounding war in Beirut and southern Lebanon. He deftly pins down the history of Western intervention and its horrifying effects on the country, so even someone who knows little about the Middle East and its conflicts will understand what has led Lebanon through such a period of bloodshed. Particularly moving are his chapters involving the Sabra and Chatila massacres, and the abduction of the head of the Associated Press, Terry Anderson. A completely involving, honest piece of war journalism, Pity the Nation is definitely worth the read for anyone who knows little about the area or its hardships.

كتاب مؤلم مؤلم لأبعد حد
أن تقرأ كتاب عن عذابات سنين في بضعة أيام فتشعر بألمهم وتتعذب
شيء مؤلم جدا
ازداد حنقي وكرهي للأسرائيلين بعد هذا الكتاب
استفزني في الفصل السابع مقولة الجندي الأسرائيلي وتصريحه بأنه
يريد قتل جميع الفلسطيينين
وفي هذا الكتاب كشف الكثير من غدر وخداع الأسرائيلين
واعذارهم الواهية في ارتكاب المجازر
وطريقتهم بادعاء الهدنه لتمويل ذخائرهم العسكرية ثم نكثهم للهدن \
ماأثار استغرابي ��دهشتي كثيرا كيفية استقبال المسيحين المارونيين للججنود الأسرائيلين بعد كل مارتكبوه
من قصف وقتل ودمار وقتلهم اكثر من عشرة الاف مدني من غير ذنب \ويستقبلونهم برمي الورد والأرز عليهم
وكأن شيء لم يكن!
تعبت وتأثرت كثيرا من هذا الكتاب لكن
لم يؤثر بي شيء اكبر من مجزرة قانا ومجازر صبرا وشاتيلا
عشت معهم وشممت رائحة الموت
عرفني الكتاب الكثير عن تاريخ لبنان الذي لم اكن اعرفه
ويعد مرجع لمن يريد التعرف على الحروب الأهليه والأحتلال الأسرائيلي للبنان
لكن لا أنصح به اصحاب القلوب الضعيفة
بما فيه من وصف دقيق وبشع لحالات القتل والمجازر التي حصلت

mammoth, wildly upsetting, one-of-kind book by robert fisk, insanely impressive and humble journalist who lived in beirut for ~30 years. picked it up to try and understand the lebanese present via its past, which is intimately tied in with israel, palestine, syria, and of course the US (and france). helped me understand the lebanese civil war, and the what felt like 100s of internal and external factions a lot more
the imagery of lebanese people always welcoming new occupiers & militaries by tossing rice and rose water out their windows, only for the occupiers to be cursed once again by their own involvement and hubris stood out, as well as the way history repeats itself, now in gaza, with the same twisted playbook. very eye-opening read for understanding The Middle East and broader world…. wish Everyone could read this but alas
