Roy Casagranda
Roy Edward Casagranda (born 1969 [ 1 ] ) is an American political scientist , historian , and author . He is a professor of political science at Austin Community College (ACC) and the founder of the Austin School , a public lecture series on history, geopolitics, and international relations. [ 2 ]
Life
Roy Casagranda was born in 1969 and married Victoria E. Edwards in Harris, Texas, in 1991; they divorced in 1993. [ 3 ] In 2002, he married Banafsheh Madanine (or Madaninejad) [ 4 ] in Travis, Texas. She had come to the US from Iran as a student and now holds several university degrees and works as a university professor. [ 5 ]
Academic career
Casagranda earned an Associate in General Studies from the University of Maryland Global Campus, European Division, Würzburg in 1990 , a BS in Political Science in 1994, and a Master of Science in Political Science from the University of Houston in 2002. [ 6 ] Since 2006, Casagranda has been a professor in the Government Department at Austin Community College. From 2007 to 2012, he taught online as an Adjunct Associate Professor of History at the University of Maryland, [ 6 ] where he developed teaching modules on World War II , among other things . In 2017, he received his PhD from the University of Texas at Austin with a dissertation on the Colonization of the Normative Realm in the Age of Instrumentality . [ 6 ]
Research and publications
His research interests include political philosophy (especially ancient, modern, and German Continental), the Middle East , American foreign policy , the history of the Eastern Mediterranean , and decision theory . Casagranda has published articles in various media outlets, including Iranian reformist journals such as Merhnameh and Donya-e-Eqtesad Daily . In the US, he wrote for the Austin American-Statesman , analyzing, among other things, the Arab Spring . He is the author of the historical novel The Blood Throne of Caria (2018) and has served as an editor on military history works such as Island of Fire and Besieged . [ 7 ]
Media appearance
Since the beginning of his academic career, Casagranda has pursued a narrative approach to knowledge transfer, distinct from traditional academic lecture formats. This has led to a career as a public scholar with a significant presence on social media . Casagranda regularly delivers public online lectures, which are posted on his YouTube channel and receive high view counts. Casagranda maintains a blog and an online shop. [ 6 ] He serves as a consultant for the Safe Space Pictures Foundation. [ 7 ]
Awards
In 2017, Casagranda received the NISOD Teaching Excellence Award for outstanding teaching.
