Israel in Palestine: Jewish Rejection of Zionism에 대한 <약 1,000단어 요약 + 평론>입니다.

Yakov M. Rabkin

Rabkin

(Three Oaths)

Rabkin

Rabkin

Rabkin

  • Neturei Karta

Rabkin

Rabkin

Rabkin

Rabkin

Rabkin

<Israel in Palestine

→ <Rabkin vs Shlomo Sand vs Ilan Pappé 3

In the wake of the Hamas attack of October 7 and the Israeli response, historian and current affairs commentator Yakov Rabkin brings together his writings that shed light on the violence in Palestine since the creation of the State of Israel.

For decades, Yakov Rabkin has drawn attention to the danger Israel has posed to both Palestinians and Jews, both in Israel and in other countries. Far from protecting Jews, the State of Israel has contributed to creating and aggravating a situation that over time has become increasingly intractable.

The author describes Palestine as it was on the eve of Zionist colonisation, recalling how Jews initially reacted to the Zionist movement and its goals. He highlights how Zionism, disdaining Jewish tradition, created a "new Hebrew man" steeped in a powerful mix of victimhood and exclusive nationalism and therefore oblivious to the fate of the Palestinians. He reminds us that Jewish identity is traditionally based on a spiritual commitment open to all races, the concept of Israel denoting not so much a geographical region but a community of believers.

A return to the Land of Israel achieved by political and military means is antithetic to the Jewish tradition. In fact, Zionism has well-documented Protestant and Anglo-Saxon roots, which explains the massive support Israel enjoys among millions of Evangelical Christians around the world, and, on the other hand, why Jews have played such a prominent role in the pro-Palestinian protests sparked by violence against Gaza. At the same time, it shows how since 1967, there emerged a new national Judaism to provide religious legitimacy to the Zionist state.

Avoiding polemics and sensationalism, this book allows the reader to reconsider the nature of the Israel/Palestine tragedy that has spilled over beyond Israel/Palestine. The book is rather short and targets the general reader. It requires no previous expertise in the subject, yet shows deeper and less known aspects of the conflict and, thus, opens perspectives on novel approaches to peace.

This book has also been published in French, Japanese and Spanish language editions

I don't know what to make of this book. The author says Israel sank the USS Liberty (page 62). But that is not true. 34 American crewmen were killed and 174 wounded according to Wikipedia. But the ship was repaired and scrapped in 1973, 6 years after the attack by Israel. Such a glaring error in this book by a history professor? Are there more errors? Amazon forced me to select a star rating, I went with 2, because I just don't know if what I read is really true.

UNRATED

In Israel in Palestine: Jewish Rejection of Zionism, Yakov Rabkin argues that the actions of the Israeli state, particularly in Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories, are reflecting poorly on traditional Judaism. He maintains that the political project of Zionism, led largely by secular elites, is distinct from and often at odds with religious Jewish tradition.
As he explains:
(The leaders of the Zionist settlement in Palestine came almost exclusively from the Russian Empire. It was in Russia that the concept of the “secular Jew,” a notion essential to the success of the nationalist project, first emerged and crystallised. This new concept rejected the religious dimension of Jewish identity, both ritual and moral, and retained only its biological and even racial dimensions. This is how, for them, being a Jew came to signify someone belonging to a nationality rather than a religious identity with its important code of ethics. With the creation of the State of Israel in 1948, this identity became overtly political.)

Throughout the book, Rabkin denounces Israeli conduct in Gaza and Palestine more broadly, presenting extensive historical and political material to support his claims.

One interesting aspect of the book is Rabkin’s explanation of the dichotomy between Israeli government elites and the everyday Jewish citizen in Israel. He carefully distinguishes between secular political leadership and religious Jewish communities, challenging the common assumption that the policies of the Israeli state represent Judaism as a whole. In doing so, he lays out foundational historical context that helps explain how this divide developed and how it continues to shape current realities. This distinction is further emphasised when he writes:
(Traditional Jewish identity is rooted in adherence to Torah commandments and encompasses both private and public behaviour and actions. Israelism, by contrast, imposes no moral or ritual obligations, while conveying a strong sense of belonging and collective pride. According to Israeli intellectual Boaz Evron (1927–2018), “this moral identification with power politics is tantamount to idolatry,” especially since, in his view, “Zionism is, in truth, a negation of Judaism.”)

Rabkin also highlights how Israel’s influence extends into other Western nations in ways that restrict public criticism. He notes:
(Western bias towards Israel suffers from a democratic deficit: unlike the ruling class, the majority of citizens in Western countries regard the State of Israel as a danger to international peace and a threat to fundamental humanity. In response to mass demonstrations against Israel and its supporters, many Western governments stepped up measures to restrict freedom of expression, dismantle encampments and stifle other forms of protest.)

Recent examples include hate speech laws implemented in Australia, which further illustrate how opposition to the Israeli government or Zionism more broadly can be effectively silenced. This is a worrying development in any democratic society concerned with freedom of expression.

Although there are points on which I disagree with Rabkin, particularly in relation to his stance on the Bolshevik takeover and assassination of the Russian Tsar and his family, this book presents well documented information that is increasingly being recognised on a global scale. The material prompts reflection and further consideration of the historical and political narratives we have all been fed.
