I am new to the study of Talmud. I have the entire collection of Rambam. The Rabbi recommended me to buy this book. It is amazing. It's written in a way to keep your attention on your studies.
The quality of the book as I bought it used is in excellent condition. I'm going to buy one book at a time until I have the entire works.

I don't know what took me so long to realize this book would be so invaluable to me and help me with deeper understanding of nuanced information within the Talmud. Rabbi Steinsaltz has made a monumental contribution to studies not only of the Talmud but the Hebrew culture and scriptures in general. Am continuing a search for the rest of his translation of the Nazikin section of the Talmud collection I have his compilation of Bava Metzia. Beautiful work.

The definitive English translation of the Talmud -- well, actually, the only translation. I know far too little Hebrew and Aramaic to comment on how good the translations are, but experts seem to regard them highly, and the commentaries are masterful. Will repay many hours of study,, if you're into this sort of thing, BTW it's beautifully presented, a fine conversation piece for your living room bookcase. Enjoy!

This is an old book that’s full of wisdom and great information! The pages even smelled like it may have been sitting in the warehouse for years! What a waste of precious time! But this at Barnes and Noble and it would cost you $90, if they have it in stock! I highly recommend this book! This would be a wonderful Hanukkah gift!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not what I thought I was getting, but a very good reference book.

It's probably my fault, but I thought I was getting a copy of the Talmud and instead this turned out to be a well-written reference guide, just not a copy of the Talmud as I was hoping. Maybe there isn't a 'Talmud' out there that is a single book. I was trying to educate myself on other major religions and I guess I just didn't understand what I was getting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marvelous reference book

This is a really wonderful reference book, putting things in historical perspective, giving alphabetical references to Talmudic terms and methods. A great, although not exhaustive, reference for the student of Talmud, the curious, or the researcher. Talmudic referencing is Steinsaltz at his best - a fish in water. Essential for a Hebraic Library or School. I ordered the book because I had seen a copy at a friend's library.

Excellent tool. For the beginner (me) the following to chapters provided the 'AHA!!' moment:
'Essential Nature of Talmud' and
'Guideline for Talmudic Studies'
Clear, precise - as all Rabbi Steinsaltz's works.
