Two rabbis, visiting Palestine in 1897, observed that the land was like a bride, 'beautiful, but married to another man'. By which they meant that, if a place was to be found for Israel in Palestine, where would the people of Palestine go? This is a dilemma that Israel has never been able to resolve.
No conflict today is more dangerous than that between Israel and the Palestinians. The implications it has for regional and global security cannot be overstated. The peace process as we know it is dead and no solution is in sight. Nor, as this book argues, will that change until everyone involved in finding a solution accepts the real causes of conflict, and its consequences on the ground.
Leading writer Ghada Karmi explains in fascinating detail the difficulties Israel's existence created for the Arab world and why the search for a solution has been so elusive. Ultimately, she argues that the conflict will end only once the needs of both Arabs and Israelis are accommodated equally. Her startling conclusions overturn conventional thinking - but they are hard to refute.

Dr Karmi is a Palestinian who was a victim of the ethnic cleansing, the Nakba, of 1948. Her account of the history and plight of Palestine is abundantly researched and documented. It is written in a clear and readable style. As well as a history with perceptive analysis, Dr Karmi offers what is, in my view, the only feasible and just solution. That is, a single democratic state with implementation of the Palestinian Right of Return.
I think this book is essential reading for anyone interested in Palestine and Israel. An excellent work.

Sorry for the star, you can't select 0 stars!
Arabs are good (including terrorists) - Jews are bad. That's the essence of the conflict Ghada Karmi researched from her comfortable Golders Green Jewish London neighbourhood. What a waste of money.

A very interesting read. It explains very clearly the problem between Israel and Palestine, its history, international involvement and shows that the Palestine people have been neglected economically, politically by the world community. The book offers some suggestions as to how peace between these two peoples might be achieved. But in the end it seems that the guilt of the West and in particular America and Germany ultimately keeps the conflict alive and well. Very sad indeed.

A story full of sentiment and fabrications. The book revolves around a Palestinian who leaves in 1948 and comes to England. The rest of the book details her 'perspective', which is very biased.
