Jewish Exceptionalism In The Palestinian Solidarity Movement

The clearest expression of Jewish exceptionalism in relation to Palestinians lies in its manifestation through self identified “anti Zionist” Jews in academia and media, many of whom reproduce harmful narratives about Palestinians while remaining fully accepted within the broader political and intellectual movement.
This is not a fringe phenomenon. It is not a handful of bad actors. It is a structural feature of how the Western left has organized itself around Palestine. Always making room for Jewish voices, always centering Jewish feelings, always demanding that Palestinians prove their humanity while assuming it in Jews by default.
Good examples include the former co-founder of +972mag and current editor of New Lines Magazine, Lisa Goldman; Ariel Gold; Arielle Angel; Naomi Klein; Zachary Foster; Maura Finkelstein; Benjamin Balthasar; Alina Stefanescu; and others. They have, by and large, done “good work”, to an untrained eye, for Palestinians while simultaneously promoting anti-Palestinian hate. They have written articles, given talks, signed statements, and built careers on the backs of Palestinian suffering. They are applauded by a movement too afraid to criticize Jews.
This is the exception that proves the rule; when Palestinians resist, they are condemned. When Jews condemn that resistance even while calling themselves “anti Zionist” they are celebrated.
The First Critical Days
In the first critical days after October 7, 2023, these “anti-Zionist” Jews engaged in hasbara. They invoked narratives of “Jewish safety” in Israel rather than recognizing or even attempting to understand Palestinian resistance. More importantly, they failed to challenge the Zionist narratives about Palestinians that were rapidly mobilized to justify violence on a scale exceeding the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Within one week, Israel had dropped 6,000 bombs on Gaza. Within three weeks, the death toll surpassed 7,000 more than the entire twenty year “War on Terror” in some years. Within one month, the world was watching a live streamed escalated genocide. While “anti Zionist” Jews were on social media, in newspapers, on podcasts, repeating the same atrocity stories that have been used to justify every Israeli massacre since 1948.
They did not ask who benefits from this narrative? They did not ask has Israel ever told the truth about Palestinian resistance? They did not ask why are we centering Israeli testimony over Palestinian testimony, again?
Instead, they performed their disclaimers. They performed their condemnations of Hamas. They performed their grief for Israeli victims, victims they framed as innocent, as civilian, as deserving of mourning in a way Palestinians never are.
And the Palestinian solidarity movement thanked them for it.
October 7, 2023 Day 0
On October 7th, Palestinians in Gaza broke out of the open-air concentration camp they had been sealed inside for sixteen years. They crossed a fence that separated a ghetto from homes built on their ancestors’ mass graves. This was not an act of inexplicable savagery. It was resistance to a century of violent Jewish supremacy.
Within hours, the narrative machinery began to turn.
October 9, 2023, Day 2 (~500+ Palestinians killed)
Anne Irfan historian, married to an ex-Israeli Defence Forces operative announced her book on the history of Gaza via Simon & Schuster. The announcement came as Israeli bombs were already falling on the very population she would later claim to care about. Within two days of October 7th, while Palestinian men, women, and children were being blown apart by vaporizing bombs, Irfan positioned herself to profit monetarily from the crisis.
She is married to Haim Vaturi, an ex-IDF soldier who would later post, in his own words, “No ceasefire till they’re all back.” Not a single public repudiation from Irfan. Not one. Somehow, if you are Jewish, you can marry a member of the Waffen SS and still pose as the victim. The Palestinian solidarity movement, consumed by Judeophilia, welcomes her anyway.
October 10, 2023 – Day 3 (~500+ Palestinians killed)
Ariel Gold who formerly worked at CODEPINK and is an anti war peace activist (I want to laugh) shared the widely circulated claim about “40 babies killed, some beheaded” on X (formerly Twitter). She wrote: “Massacre in Kfar Aza kibbutz in southern Israel, 40 babies killed, some beheaded, people burned alive. Dear G-d, I am without words.”
“Ms. Gold worked at CODEPINK Women for Peace, where she was the national co-director and a Middle East policy analyst”
These narratives did not emerge in a vacuum. Organizations such as ZAKA (founded by a later convicted pedophile) played a visible role in relaying early reports from the ground, and their statements were frequently taken up by international media. Yet the reliance on only Israeli sources, underscores how easily state aligned or adjacent actors can influence the framing of events in their most chaotic early stages. It was journalistic malpractice to exclusively or at all run with Israeli state propaganda. The result is a feedback loop; claims circulate, are repeated by journalists and commentators, and quickly harden into what is treated as common knowledge.
October 10, 2023, Days 0-3 (~900+ Palestinians killed)
Lisa Goldman former co-founder of +972 Magazine, current editor at New Lines Magazine contributed directly to the spread of unverified and inflammatory claims in the first critical days after October 7. In one instance, she asserted that she had witnessed “ISIS style executions” carried out by Hamas claims for which she provided no evidence and which have been widely debunked. On 10th the death toll had exceeded 900 in Gaza yet Goldman had repeated verbatim what Yossi Landau, head of operations at Zaka had reported, “According to CBS, “[Landau] saw with his own eyes children and babies who had been beheaded.””
Goldman was not alone in spreading these falsehoods. The same unsubstantiated claims were amplified at the highest levels. On October 10, 2023, President Joe Biden told a White House gathering of Jewish leaders:
“I’ve been doing this a long time, and I never really thought that I would see or have confirmed pictures of terrorists beheading children.”
The White House was later forced to walk back Biden’s statement. A spokesman clarified that the president had not seen such photos and had based his comments on Israeli media reports and statements from Prime Minister Netanyahu’s spokesman . The original claim, that Hamas had beheaded 40 babies, originated from Israeli journalist Nicole Zedek of i24 News, who cited unnamed Israeli soldiers. Other journalists said they had been unable to verify the claim, and the IDF itself acknowledged it could not confirm the reports. Hamas called the allegations “fabricated and baseless.”
Yet the damage was done. The narrative had spread.
Goldman’s allegations of “ISIS style executions” were so thoroughly challenged that even Israeli voices publicly contradicted them. Yasmin Porat, a survivor of the Kibbutz Be’eri attack, gave testimony to Israeli media on October 15, 2023, just eight days after the attack, revealing that the Israeli military itself had likely killed many of the hostages in Be’eri. According to Porat, Hamas fighters had shielded her and other Israelis from Israeli fire .
Porat told reporters that after her release, she informed the Israeli military that 14 POWs were inside a house in Be’eri along with dozens of Hamas fighters. Despite this knowledge, Brigadier General Barak Hiram ordered a tank to open fire on the house, killing nearly everyone inside . Hadas Dagan, the sole survivor of that house, later confirmed Porat’s testimony to Israel’s Channel 12, stating that an Israeli tank shell killed her husband .
Goldman never issued a formal apology for her unsubstantiated “ISIS style executions” claim. Instead, she deleted the post following public pressure and subsequently made her account private. This is the pattern amplification followed by quiet retraction. No public reckoning. No accountability.
The episode raises broader questions about the integrity of “anti Zionist” Jews in moments of crisis especially when misinformation contributes to narratives that can justify large scale violence. By the time the corrections came, if they came at all, the stories had already shaped global perception. The dead were already being counted. The bombs were already falling.
October 11, 2023, Day 4 (~900+ Palestinians killed)
Naomi Klein’s The Shock Doctrine outlines how states exploit moments of crisis, shock and awe, to manufacture consent for war. Writing as a journalist during the Second Iraq War, a conflict infamously justified by false claims about weapons of mass destruction and a war that cost over a million Iraqi lives, Klein extensively analyzed how propaganda enables and accelerates mass violence. As she explains:
“The Shock Doctrine retells the story of the most dominant ideology of our time, how the ‘free market’ came to dominate the world… Klein shows how it has exploited moments of shock and extreme violence in order to implement its economic policies… a program of social and economic engineering… that she calls ‘disaster capitalism.’”
Yet Klein herself, four days into Israel’s bombardment of Gaza, four days into a massacre that would soon exceed the death toll of the Iraq War’s most violent years published an op-ed in The Guardian titled, “Why are some of the left celebrating the killings of Israeli Jews?”
She framed the visible expressions of joy from some on the left as “celebrating Jewish murder.” She framed Palestinians reacting to their own liberation from a ghetto as if they were dancing on Jewish graves. She offered only a milquetoast apology later. But the framing did its work.
This framing rests on a series of assumptions that collapse under scrutiny. As if Jews cannot be perpetrators of violence. As if Israeli Jews living in homes built on mass graves are not participants in a system of domination. As if Palestinian joy at breaking out of a concentration camp is moral failure rather than political response.
Klein framed the Palestinian resistance to a century of violent Jewish supremacy as the celebration of innocent Jews being kidnapped from tanks. Four days into a genocide. While Israeli bombs were already leveling neighborhoods. While the death toll climbed near a thousand.
This is not anti-Zionism. This is disaster capitalism applied to narrative using the shock of October 7th to manufacture consent for the genocide of Gaza.
November 15, 2023, Day 39 (~11,300+ Palestinians killed)
Haim Vaturi ex-IDF operative, partner of “anti Zionist” historian Anne Irfan posted, “No ceasefire till they’re all back.”
By November 15th, over eleven thousand Palestinians had been killed. Entire families erased from the civil registry. Children pulled from rubble. Hospitals surrounded by tanks. “No ceasefire” means continue the bombing. Continue the killing. Continue the genocide.
Anne Irfan, who claims to oppose Jewish supremacy, has never publicly repudiated her partner’s position. She has never had to. The Palestinian solidarity movement does not require it. Because she is Jewish. Because she is “anti Zionist.” Because the movement is too consumed by Judeophilia to ask basic questions like, Why are you married to a man who served in the military committing this genocide?
November 19, 2023, Day 43 (~13,000+ Palestinians killed)
Arielle Angel editor-in-chief of Jewish Currents, positioned as a critical voice posted, ”We don’t need to deny the evidence & extent of Hamas’s atrocities on 10/7 even with credible reports that some may have been killed by Israeli forces in order to insist that there is no military solution & what’s happening in Gaza isn’t justified. Denialism doesn’t help the cause.” By November 19th, Israel had dropped over 25,000 tons of explosives on Gaza more than the nuclear bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined. Over thirteen thousand Palestinians were martyred, including over five thousand children. Al-Shifa hospital was under siege. The world was watching a live streamed genocide.
Yet Angel editor-in-chief of Birthright Currents chose this moment to lecture Palestinians and their supporters about “denialism.” She published a post on the Israelis she knew and lost with a distinct sense of comradery with her Judeo Nazi kin. As if only Jews get to be eternal victims even as they occupy land, even as the Israeli military mass murders Israelis with the Hannibal Directive and blames it on Hamas, even as “anti Zionist” Jews spread atrocity propaganda.
The function of Angel’s post is not to center Palestinian death. It is to preemptively discipline anyone who might point out that Israeli forces killed Israelis on October 7th. The phrase “denialism doesn’t help the cause” is a closing argument not against Israel, but against Palestinians.
When Angel invokes “Hamas atrocities,” she is alluding to a specific set of allegations. The most incendiary of these were claims of mass rape and systematic sexual violence on October 7th. These claims were repeated endlessly by Israeli officials, amplified by Western media, and used to justify the wholesale destruction of Gaza. Yet by November 19th, they had already begun to unravel.
A United Nations Independent International Commission of Inquiry, reviewing testimonies obtained by journalists and Israeli police, stated clearly: “The committee reviewed testimonies... but was unable to independently verify these allegations. In addition, the Commission found that certain specific allegations were false, inaccurate, or inconsistent with other evidence or data and excluded them from its evaluation.”
By August 2025, the UN Secretary General formally put Israeli armed forces “on notice” for potential listing in the annual conflict related sexual violence report, citing “credible information of violations by Israeli armed and security forces, perpetrated against Palestinians in several prisons, a detention center and military base.” Hamas, by contrast, was listed based on “reasonable grounds” and “clear and convincing information” that included the recovered bodies of naked women as “circumstantial” evidence. The asymmetry is stark one side is monitored and warned the other is condemned with certainty, often based on evidence that even the UN admits is indirect.
It doesn’t feel like hyperbole to suggest that all these Jewish women in media and the NGO sector supposedly “for a free Palestine” are enablers of the onslaught against Palestinians. They laid the groundwork for the now thoroughly debunked New York Times article titled Screams Without Words, a publisher best described as a propaganda outfit with an 11 million readership. This is the same New York Times that published titles like “How Bombing Iraq is Good for Iraqis”.
Only Jewish trauma demands acknowledgment even when that trauma is weaponized to justify genocide, even when the evidence for it crumbles under scrutiny, even while the same violence is being enacted against Palestinians in real time, on camera, documented by the UN, admitted by Israel’s own military lawyers.
Angel’s “atrocities” are a rhetorical shield. They exist not to protect victims but to discipline the left; to draw a red line around Palestinian resistance that she would never dream of drawing around Israeli state violence. She does not demand that Israel prove its claims before bombing hospitals. She demands that Palestinians prove their innocence before being allowed to exist.
That is not anti-Zionism. That is Jewish supremacy in progressive clothing. It’s exactly why “anti Zionist” Jews like Angel are not allies they are enablers.
December 4, 2023, Day 58 (~15,900+ Palestinians killed)
Benjamin Balthasar and Alina Stefanescu both self-described anti-Zionist Jews – coordinated their messaging on X. Balthasar wrote, “Yes, I don’t know exactly what happened either, but there is enough evidence to suggest that Palestinian fighters, whether under direct control of Hamas leadership or not, intentionally killed many civilians.” Stefanescu agreed, “Agree. I don’t understand how this can even be disputed. A bit of 9-11 truther-vibes emerging... We are headed for Foucault’s take on Iran if such readings continue to celebrate carceral conditions and torture.” Balthasar added, “Definitely 9/11 truther vibes no doubt.”
By December 4th, nearly sixteen thousand Palestinians had been killed. The International Court of Justice would later find it “plausible” that Israel was committing genocide and these two “anti Zionist” Jews were comparing Palestinians who question the atrocity narrative to 9/11 truthers. This is the discourse that “anti-Zionist” Jews produce. Not solidarity. Not resistance. Not even basic skepticism of Israeli propaganda. Just a slightly more polite version of the same hasbara you would hear from Netanyahu himself.
February 10, 2024, Day 126 (~28,000+ Palestinians killed)
Zachary Foster who built a $199(?) Palestine course and released it while Palestinians were being vaporized posted about his own victimization. He wrote, ”On Oct 7th I was running in and out of bomb shelters so as not to get hit by Hamas rockets fired at Tel Aviv/Jaffa, where I was at the time. One landed about 100 meters from me and killed someone.”
He added: “I’ve also described the Oct. 7th attacks as gruesome atrocities on every podcast I’ve ever gone on.” Let us be clear about what Foster is doing here, four months after October 7th, four months into a genocide and over 28,000 Palestinians martyred. He is not acknowledging that the rocket that killed someone near him was an act of resistance directed at a city built on the ruins of Palestinian villages like Jaffa, whose original inhabitants were ethnically cleansed in 1948.
Instead, Foster centers his own narrow escape. The Palestinian who fired that rocket assuming it was even a Palestinian rocket and not Israeli friendly fire or Iron Dome debris, which has killed Israelis before is not a human being with a political consciousness. That Palestinian is simply a threat to Zachary Foster’s safety.
The framing of “gruesome atrocities” repeated on every podcast is not neutral description. It is hasbara. It is the same language used by the Israeli government to justify the bombing of hospitals, schools, and residential towers. It is the same language that was mobilized to dehumanize Palestinians and manufacture consent for a genocide.
Never mind that by February 10, 2024, the “40 beheaded babies” narrative had long collapsed and the “ISIS style executions” had no evidence. The Israeli witnesses and even the Israeli military itself later confirmed that many of the deaths on October 7th were caused by Israeli forces operating under the Hannibal Directive a protocol that calls for killing Israeli soldiers and civilians alike to prevent their capture.
None of that mattered to Foster. What mattered was that Zachary Foster be seen as the victim, and the people whose ancestral land he was standing on be seen as the aggressors. To Zachary Foster, Palestinians are perfectly defensible so long as they are mass murdered. But should they throw stones at Goliath should they fire rockets at the military-industrial complex that has been bombing them for decades that is the line where he stops supporting them.
It is as if the Nazi caricatures about Jews are all coming to life. Jews who enact crimes, then victimize themselves, and yet still become monetary benefactors of the people whose oppression they benefit from. To add insult to injury, we must also hail these same Jews as the saviors of the Palestinian people, people of moral conscience whom we must applaud. Anything less, and one is framed as an outlier, a “purity tester,” even when all evidence to the contrary is staring everyone in the face.
February 18, 2024 – Day 134 (~28,000+ Palestinians killed)
Zachary Foster defended Anne Irfan against criticism that her partner is an ex-IDF operative. He wrote, “I can imagine that must be an incredibly painful situation for Anne that you are making worse.” The problem, for Zachary Foster, is not that a woman who calls herself “anti Zionist” married a man who served in an army that is actively committing genocide. The problem is that people point it out and that pointing it out makes Anne feel bad.
By February 18th, over twenty-eight thousand Palestinians had been killed. Mass graves were being discovered at hospitals and the Nasser Hospital was under siege. It was the same day that the Palestinian Red Crescent released the audio recording of Hind Rajab’s final moments. The ICJ had issued preliminary rulings. And Zachary Foster was worried about the emotional state of a woman married to an IDF operative. It wasn’t enough that Foster repeated hasbara about Hamas. He went on to defend Anne Irfan. Somehow, if you are Jewish you can marry a member of the Waffen SS and still pose as the victim.
June 6, 2025, Day ~607 (~45,000+ Palestinians killed, many more uncounted)
Maura Finkelstein, whose writing I used to follow, published in The New York Times. She wrote about being fired for her politics. She included the now compulsory disclaimer, she does not condone Hamas. By June 2025, the death toll in Gaza had exceeded forty five thousand, with thousands more buried under rubble, uncounted, unnameable.
To write in The New York Times is not a neutral act. It is an entry into a narrative space that has historically constrained how Palestinian resistance can be understood or even named. The paper has faced sustained criticism for amplifying unverified claims, selectively framing Palestinian suffering, and reproducing narratives that align with Jewish supremacy. Within many activist and academic circles, it has been informally boycotted for its complicity in normalizing mass violence.
Finkelstein chose to publish there anyway. With the disclaimer. With the ritual condemnation of Palestinian resistance that must be performed before any analysis is permitted. Writing in a platform with the reach and influence of The New York Times means addressing not only a broad readership but one that is already embedded within particular assumptions about legitimacy and violence. In such a space, even nuanced critiques can be flattened, and disclaimers can take on outsized importance. The statement “I do not condone Hamas,” rather than opening space for critical engagement, serves as a signal that aligns the author with prevailing narratives, narratives that have been repeatedly mobilized to justify escalation of mass slaughter rather than an attempt at a cessation of that violence.
This framing is at odds with a long history of anti colonial struggle. From Algeria to Haiti, dominant narratives have labeled resistance as “terrorism” while ignoring the systemic violence that produced it. To categorically condemn Palestinian resistance particularly in a publisher like The New York Times reproduces that same asymmetry. It isolates acts of resistance from their context while leaving the structures of domination, Jewish Supremacy, unexamined.
None of this is to argue that moral judgment has no place. It is to ask why do certain forms of violence demand immediate, ritual condemnation while others the dropping of 25,000 tons of explosives on a captive population are absorbed into the language of policy and inevitability?
Perpetual Judeo Nazi Victims
It would seem that to Jewish “anti Zionists,” Jews, from infancy to death, are and can only be victims. Victims of not knowing. Of being brainwashed. Of being forever unlearned in the humanity of anyone but themselves. All this, seemingly awful to most people, is absolutely lost on most “anti Zionist” Jews. But to make things worse, the Palestinian solidarity movement too consumed by Judeophilia (Jew worship) will forever welcome and accommodate these same Jews. As if they have any right at all to define themselves as the saviors of Palestinians, unvetted by anyone but their own Jew-worshipping echo chambers.
In any awakening to moral injustice, there are two stages. The first is recognizing wrong done and one’s own complicity. The second the logical response in a just world is to fight those structures of injustice no matter the discomfort. Yet “anti-Zionist” Jews have only reached level one. Level two remains fantastical. They seek solely to show themselves as separate from their Judeo Nazi counterparts but never actively name Judaism and Jews, by and large, who are at every level of Zionism. The inability to name Jewish/Jews/Judaism is a mockery of a past and current reality in which Palestinians are being genocided by Jews, for Jews, by a Jewish state, under the banner of Jewish symbols.
Palestinians are silenced for even naming Jews in their own genocide. Palestinians must eternally nuance Jews and European historical white supremacy, while Jews with machine guns wearing kippahs break down the doors of their homes, speaking in Hebrew.
At its core, this is a struggle over language who is allowed to name power, and who is required to obscure it. When those most affected, Palestinians, are denied the ability to describe their own reality plainly, while Jews are rewarded for euphemism, the result is not nuance but distortion.
Even If We Grant Them Ignorance
Let us say, for the sake of argument, that every single one of these “anti Zionist” Jews was genuinely unaware. Let us pretend that Naomi Klein did not know the history of Israeli propaganda when she wrote about “celebrating Jewish murder.” Let us imagine that Ariel Gold had no way of verifying the “40 beheaded babies” story before she shared it. Let us assume that Arielle Angel, Benjamin Balthasar, Alina Stefanescu, Lisa Goldman, Zachary Foster, Maura Finkelstein, and the rest were all simply duped innocent vessels for a hasbara machine that has been operating for over seventy seven years.
Even then. Even if we grant them all of that. Even if we accept the most generous, most forgiving, most impossibly charitable reading of their actions.
Does that not prove they are a threat anyway?
A person who uncritically amplifies genocidal propaganda is dangerous, regardless of intent. A person who repeats atrocity stories that justify mass slaughter is a liability, regardless of self-identification. A person who cannot tell the difference between liberation and terrorism, who cannot distinguish a resistance movement from a cartoon villain, who cannot see that the people dropping the bombs are not the victims that person is not an ally. That person is a weapon in the hands of the enemy.
The road to genocide is paved with well meaning people who “just wanted to believe the victims.” The road to genocide is paved with people who said “we don’t need to deny the evidence” when the evidence was fabricated. The road to genocide is paved with “anti-Zionist” Jews who platformed Israeli propaganda while Palestinians were being vaporized.
Intentions do not matter. Consequences do.
And the consequence of these “anti Zionist” Jews whether knowing or unknowing, malicious or naive is identical; they provided cover for a genocide. They laundered atrocity propaganda. They made it easier for the world to look away.
But their function is not merely to amplify. Their function is to obscure. To take a reality in which Palestinians are being genocided by a Jewish state under Jewish symbols and reframe it as a moral dilemma between two equal sides. To take a resistance movement fighting for survival and reframe it as an inexplicable act of savage barbarism. To take Jewish power real, material, earth-shattering power and reframe it as Jewish vulnerability. This is what “anti Zionist” Jews do better than any Zionist they make the unthinkable seem reasonable. They make the genocide palatable. They make the erasure of Palestinians digestible to liberal consciences.
If they are too incompetent to recognize hasbara when it stares them in the face, they are too incompetent to be trusted with Palestinian lives. If they are too morally confused to center Palestinian testimony over Israeli military sources, they have no place in a movement for Palestinian liberation. If their primary function is to obscure rather than reveal, to confuse rather than clarify, to center themselves rather than the colonized then they are not allies. They are obstacles.
Ignorance is not an excuse. It is an indictment.
So no. I do not grant them ignorance. I do not grant them innocence. I do not grant them the grace that they have never extended to Palestinians. But even if I did even if I bent over backward to be more charitable than they have ever been the conclusion remains the same:
These Jews are a threat. Their function is to obscure reality. They have always been a threat. And the Palestinian solidarity movement must stop pretending otherwise.

May I also add that no other group in the history has reached to the victimhood card so habitually and persistently.
