I was born in Jerusalem and raised in a West Bank settlement in a religious-Zionist home, where I lived for the first 22 years of my life.
These essays document how I liberated myself from the ideology, what it cost me to tell the truth, and what I discovered on the other side.
I write about the inherited beliefs, conditioning, trauma, fear, and belonging that shaped what I was able to see, and the process of breaking free.
I offer this collection to those on the outside who want to understand, and to those still inside who are ready to find their way out.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most important reads on Zionism and the capacity to change our minds

This is by far one of the most important reads about Zionism today. It’s a personal testimony to growing up in the system by a courageous human who risked everything in pursuit of truth and justice.
Daniel shares about his life growing up in a West Bank Jewish settlement in a Religious Zionist community, where religion and politics are fused together and are one and the same. He writes about the inherited beliefs and rhetoric about Palestinians, what he witnessed, and his process of de-programming those beliefs and leaving political Zionism behind for good through a process of awakening.
The writer balances fair criticisms with compassion and integrity, weaving spiritual context and perspectives into the story of his awakening across individual essays.
The courage to take radical accountability I at this level with so much on the line is unfortunately uncommon. But one candle can light many and there is hope for a future of healing where more Zionists open their eyes to see the whole truth.

I’m incredibly impressed by the depth and maturity in these articles. The author’s service in the Israeli military gives him a perspective that is both personal and reflective, adding layers of authenticity to his writing. He approaches a difficult topic with care, balance, and integrity. His voice is thoughtful rather than divisive, which feels especially important right now. A powerful and well-written work.
