Zeinab Badawi, award-winning broadcaster and President of SOAS, tells an epic story of the oldest inhabited continent in the world from an African perspective, for fans of William Dalrymple, David Olusoga and Peter Frankopan.
Discover the ground-breaking, must-read history of Africa, the Sunday Times bestseller charting the epic story of the oldest inhabited continent in the world from the perspectives of Africans themselves. Shortlisted for the Nero Book Awards
Everyone is originally from Africa, and this book is therefore for everyone. For too long, Africa's history has been dominated by western narratives of slavery and colonialism, or simply ignored. Now, award-winning journalist and broadcaster Zeinab Badawi sets the record straight. In this fascinating book, Badawi guides us through Africa's spectacular history - from the origins of humanity, through ancient civilisations and medieval empires, to the miseries of conquest and the elation of independence.
Visiting more than thirty African countries to interview countless historians, anthropologists, archaeologists and local storytellers, Badawi weaves together a gripping new history of the oldest inhabited continent on the planet, told through the voices of Africans themselves.

Badawi's objective in writing this book is stated as follows in the final chapter:
"Before I turn to the last chapter, an epilogue on Africa today, I would like to say to the non-African reader of this book that I hope I have demonstrated that Africa has a history, that it is a fundamental part of our global story, and one that is worthy of greater attention and respect than it has so far received. And to African readers, I hope I have managed in some small way to increase your knowledge of – and pride in – the great history of your continent. My project was inspired by the memorable words of the late Kenyan environmentalist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Wangari Maathai: ‘You cannot enslave a mind that knows itself, that understands itself, that values itself.’"
As the saying goes, history is written by the victors , generally of wars and conflicts. Africa's history has been written by Western Europeans because Africa's history is one of conquest, exploitation and murder. The British, French, Germans, IArabs, Dutch and notably Belgians literally raped, enslaved and pillaged people with amazing histories and cultures.
As a descendant of Sudanese Badawi starts us in Egypt and works her way across the continent. What has been unearthed archaeologically in Egypt may only be the beginning as she describes pyramids in Sudan and the discoveries yet to be found underground after centuries of sand settling above previous civilisations.
Her interviews are like a travel guide across the continent describing histories handed down orally.
It's a grand book which will provide an alternative understanding of African history. Further reading is required as she only skims the surface of the history of the 54 countries which make up modern Africa

This was thoughtful, interesting - and, as all history should be perhaps, as challenging to read as you might expect in places. Plus, it does a good job of taking an entire continent's long history and treating it evenly. I can't imagine how hard it would be to do that. Of course, it also made me very sad and embarrassed too, not to know much beyond Egyptian history. It was more gentle than you might have expected about the tyrannies of those cultures who have exploited Africa.
To the man who said this seemed like a feminist history, yikes. Including chapters about women isn't feminism, it's just history. I know you might have thought from the history books you read at school that history was only HIS-story, but I'm surprised you then didn't go on to complain it seems like an anti-racist history too and ask if it didn't focus a bit too much on Africa.

Africa is a large continent with a long history. “An African History of Africa” by Zeinab Badawi, tackles this complex subject with considerable vigor. She starts at the beginning of civilization with the ancient Egyptians and through some 500 pages of fascinating (but long) narrative arrives at modern day Africa. It is all very readable, but a little overwhelming. I found that I had to take numerous breaks while reading my way across the giant continent. In hindsight I should probably have skipped over the chapters of lesser interest and proceeded straight to some of the histories that most fascinated me. I learned that contrary to the standard Western myths we learned in school, Africa was not the dark continent prior to the Europeans’ arrival. And its riches and resources were not just there for the taking. It had highly organized societies just like what was found in Europe. What it did not have was the Europeans’ gunpowder. Even if you don’t plan on becoming an African history buff, this book is an excellent reference book if you are interested in global affairs.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing: Read with caution
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 May 2024

I wish I could give this book a wholehearted review, but it has real limitations. Firstly, the prose style. This is what is often called "accessible" - which in practice means unsubtle enthusiasm for everything. Every African scholar Bedawi meets is described with a superlative - "the ebullient director of this," or the "charismatic and brilliant historian of that"... Everywhere Bedawi goes, she is at once "welcomed" by local people who share their stories... To say that it lacks detachment and objectivity is, I'm afraid, an understatement. Overall, the writing feels like a Disney documentary, or like something from an old copy of the National Geographic, and it can be quite irritating.
Nor is it altogether reliable. Bedawi states firmly that Cleopatra "was of Greek-Macedonian ancestry" and that is what Herodotus says, but the debate is not concluded, especially with disputes about the ethnicity about her half-sister. Elsewhere, Bedawi refers to the French campaign in Egypt of 1798-1801 as led by "the Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte." But Napoleon was not proclaimed Emperor until 1804. This sort of basic error should have been picked up.
More generally, Bedawi treats most of African history as a succession of colourful characters, pharoahs and chiefs, male and female. But this is a very old-fashioned view of history, and does little more than replace one lot of characters - Stanley, Livingstone, Gordon, Mungo Park, Kruger et al - with a different lot. There is a much more complex history of Africa: the endless rivalries between farmers and pastoralists, for example, competing for land, which has been the nub of conflict for millenia and which is still at the heart of fighting between Arab and Black in Darfur and elsewhere in Sudan.
Lastly: Bedawi announces that by the 1970s Africa was "free" apart from a bit of tidying up to be concluded in the South. "Free" is not how it must seem to the poor of the continent whose lives are in many areas no better at all; they've replaced one lot of oppressors with another, and anyone who thinks that the current dictatorships and corruption are somehow preferable because they're in the hands of black (or Arab) elites needs to go and have a look for themselves.

Zeinab Badawi does a wonder job covering a vast amount of time while breathing life to many of the individuals and stories that make up the threads of a complex social, political, and cultural fabric that comprises the African continent.
I really enjoyed the way she structured the chapters by region, it made it easier to digest and see how they all relate to one another. I always had a clear understanding of where I was, what time it was, who the main actors were, and what their impact was in the bigger picture (even beyond Africa). It never felt overwhelming despite how much information is covers, and I think anyone would find this to be a pleasant read.
A peek into a history that is so beautiful but has seen much ugliness, has experienced many triumphs and many defeats, it holds great lessons for us to learn.

The author does an exceptional job in bringing forth largely unknown eye witness accounts of important historical events such as the impact of the slave trade on Africans and African communities and the long-lived ripple effects of colonialism in post-colonial Africa. Most importantly, the author underscores the resiliency and vibrancy of an emerging Africa largely being led by its youth. This is a must read for Africans, and especially non-Africans.

An African history of Africa: from the dawn of humanity to independence, by Zeinab Badawi
One of the best history books I've ever read. In fact this might be my favourite history book ever and although I only read for pleasure, I've read quite a lot. I found it fascinating and very absorbing. I'm already looking forward to enjoying it again as only reading it once is not enough.
(The only other historical books that I've enjoyed as much are by William Shirer: 'The rise and fall of the Third Reich' and 'The collapse of the Third Republic'.) He was also a journalist, so maybe that is why I enjoy these authors' books so much. I would also give his books 10 stars, as 5 are not enough.
I liked the mostly short, snappy chapters/sections and particularly appreciated the way Zeinab Badawi skilfully and seamlessly blended current affairs, as well as her visits to the places she's written about, with the historical facts and events. I'm no good at analysis but it might have been partly this style of writing that made it so engrossing and almost impossible to put down.
She avoids frustrating waffle that too many other authors waste pen and paper on, as well as the confusion of pages and pages about 'Henry' without being sure which 'Henry' (whether French or English) is being talked about etc. I was reading a French history book when I came across her book, but was all too happy to lay it aside to read this one, mostly due to the irritating waffle and my continual confusion about who the author was writing about. Her book was so good that I'm in two minds about whether to bother finishing the French history book I had been reading before this one!
Zeinab Badawi also avoided another pitfall by not glorying in gory or nasty details, unlike too many authors I've come across and spoil what could otherwise be good books/documentaries. The historical facts are enough for her, and indeed for me too.
I appreciate that she has many other strings to her bow, but I seriously hope that she will do whatever is necessary to enable her to write more such books, as only one is not nearly enough. If I can find affordable copies in French and Turkish (and if I thought my language skills would suffice) then I'd like to read this book again in those languages, as I enjoyed it that much.
I also hope that her book will inspire others to write similar books and therefore hopefully redress the balance somewhat of books set in Africa written from merely a colonially western point of view.

Imaging looking to at a history of Britian in one volume. What one would be left with is something totally unsatisfactory. Then buying a single volume history on the continent with the longest human habitation. ? However what Ms Bedawi lacks in detail she makes up with a more holistic vision, philosphy and love. Plus the fact i once worked with her brother! I read this after i read a history of Alexandria by Issa Islam, so where as Dr Islam book covered the history of a single city in a 500 page book Ms Bedawi looked at the same history in a couple pages. But each history had a synergetic effect on my personal knowledge bank. Brilliant introduction to African history, that the sources and talking heads are African, it made one appreciate the voices of Africa. (PS Ms Bedawi is wrong and perpetuates the Afro-European myth that man started out in Africa, We Taino knows humanity started in a cave in South Western Jamaica!). Still have 80 pages to go. Great read!

I was enchanted by the writing style in the introductory chapters, but as I read on it just became a little silly for a history book.
There is too much conjecture, too much discussion of oral history and others’ opinions (these things have their place, just not so much in a history book), and above all, a comically large number of personal anecdotes. I really don’t care where the author’s great-grandma is from, or how the author felt while looking at a monument (how many ways are there to say that you were personally moved by the significance of an ancient artifact, anyway?). This is a history book that goes out of its way to be subjective.
Additionally, I have read other books that somehow manage to tell thousands of years of history with a clearer narrative than this one. Ironic, since it is written in plain (non-academic) English, which I appreciated.

She strives to use Archeological Discoveries, and gives a short history of this or that find.
So far, the emphasis has been on skeleton finds, from the long-long past, proving the provenance of all of Humanity came from this African Continent.

If you’re looking to expand your understanding of Africa’s history, this book is a must-read. It is an enriching journey that I highly recommend to anyone interested in history, culture, or simply wanting to learn more about this incredible continent.

One of the worst history books I've read. I enjoyed the more revisionist narrative that tries to rightly place some of the most interesting characters and events on the pedestal they deserve.
But it lacks any sense of analysis or insight so descends into a endless list of brief, limited reviews of huge sweeps of history, interrupted by anecdotes of the writer which felt unnecessary. When the history is this good why place yourself into it.

This was a gift and I couldn't be more delighted. Interesting, well written - and so enjoyable to read. Sometimes history books can be a bit dense - not this one. Fresh is a great word to describe how this fascinating era of our human history was presented.
So worth the read....truly.

I am only half way through and the history seems to be guided by the religious/belief systems and I was hoping for a bit more insight into how the various civilizations were involved in their infrastructure. But its a very comfortable, easy read.

Zeinab Badawi’s history of Africa is a fine, readable book about the continent, taking the reader from the origin of homo sapiens (the dawn of humanity) through to African independence. I found it fascinating and highly informative and learned a great deal about Africa that I didn’t know before. It is a book I would recommend to others who want to know more about Africa’s often neglected history.
I hope you find my review helpful.

Zeinab’s book inspired me and has encouraged me to read further into the history of this often maligned continent. It was an ambitious project to capture in 463 pages and beautifully crafted, with Zeinab’s own personal writing style added to the mix. The history of Africa pre- and post-colonisation and slavery needs more exposure and this book goes a long way to making that need a reality. Thank you, Zeinab.

Phenomenal read…quite timely…I was inspired by the use of predominantly African scholars and sources. Zeinab also dealt with some difficult issues in a balanced and meaningful way bringing light to topics we do not like to speak about. This book will hopefully lead towards continued research and reporting of the history of a great nation from an African centred perspective. Thank you Zeinab.

Very disappointing. I bought I for a history of Africa, and I got a Muslim-biased history mostly of North Africa. I have spent a great deal of time in Southern Africa and studied its history and culture. This author is more interested in hiliting her family’s roots and less in Africavv

2.0 out of 5 stars Not history, but a thin treatment for a tv documentary
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 April 2025

It reads too much like a memoir or a treatment for a tv series than a book of history, for me. Too many personal reflections and introductions of this or that contemporary person being interviewed by the author. It’s a trendy writing style among those who want to sell big paperbacks rather than do history. It’s thin gruel at times. By contrast, the idea of an African history of Africa was exactly what I wanted.

Read the review by "Absorbed and Distracted," which hits the nail directly on the head. Maybe it's just not possible to write a thorough, thoughtful history of Africa in only ca. 450 pages, but this is like those old "See and Learn All About France in Just 10 days!!!" bus tours. I pounced on the book when I saw it advertised, but found most of what I read to be what I thought was generally known information, packaged for easy consumption. I'll have to keep looking for books that go deeper and work a little harder, and do real justice to the subject.
