On Settler Colonialism by Adam Kirsch 2024

On Settler Colonialism a book by Adam Kirsch - Bookshop.org US

Description

Since Hamas's attack on Israel last October 7, the term "settler colonialism" has become central to public debate in the United States. A concept new to most Americans, but already established and influential in academic circles, settler colonialism is shaping the way many people think about the history of the United States, Israel and Palestine, and a host of political issues.

This short book is the first to examine settler colonialism critically for a general readership. By critiquing the most important writers, texts, and ideas in the field, Adam Kirsch shows how the concept emerged in the context of North American and Australian history and how it is being applied to Israel. He examines the sources of its appeal, which, he argues, are spiritual as much as political;
how it works to delegitimize nations; and why it has the potential to turn indignation at past injustices into a source of new injustices today.
A compact and accessible introduction, rich with historical detail, the book will speak to readers interested in the Middle East, American history, and today's most urgent cultural-political debates.

첫째, <사건이 아닌 구조(structure, not an event)>라는 명제의 교조화다.

On Settler Colonialism: Ideology, Violence, And Justice Book By Adam Kirsch, ('tc') | Indigo

This short and concise book lays out in plain language how unreasonable and incoherent the ideology of "Settler Colonialism" is and how devastating the consequences would be if it was carried through. The recent university protests in favor of Palestinians makes clear that this ideology actually carries a lot of sway in certain prominent corners of our country, though they probably would not be able to survive scrutiny outside the academic bubble.
The author is citing many prominent scholars who articulate and defend these misanthropic and ahistorical ideas and with a calm and logic analysis, and without resorting to impenetrable academese.
I had to put a Post-It note on page 123-125 because he here delivers the essence of where this ideology really runs off the rails. I read it twice and felt a lot better afterwards. This is spun gold for anyone trying to understand some of the strange things going on in academia and on the left. And I am saying this a lifelong liberal.

The thing about this book is that it doesn’t try to take a deeply ideological position on Israel / Palestine but it takes the claims of Settler Colonialism very seriously. Almost more than half of the book is a dispassionate genealogy of this radical ideology with extensive quotes and references. It’s clear that Hirsch read and deeply thought about Settler Colonialism. The rest of the book is an exposition of Settler Colonialism’s internal contradictions and murderous and radical nature, and how its real life application would be an absolute disaster. The writing is extremely clear and the book can be read in 1-2 days of long reading sessions. Overall, deeply insightful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intellectual Tour de Force: A Must-Read for Understanding the Campus Protests
Reviewed in the United States on 28 August 2024

This book is a brilliant, deeply learned, and devastatingly critical intellectual history of the idea of "settler colonialism." This engaging book is a must-read for anyone trying to understand the ideas animating US campus protests over the Gaza war and the support they received from part of the academy; indeed, it is an invaluable guide to understanding the discourse that dominates the far left.

Kirsch is no adherent of "settler colonialism," but he treats his subject fairly, allowing the works of scholars in the field to speak for themselves before applying his own critical and non-polemical analysis.

In particular, Kirsch soberly demonstrates how the idea of "settler colonialism functions as an all-purpose explanation for capitalism, sexism, and climate change....The price of collapsing together such different causes, however, is that it inhibits understanding of each individual cause. Any conflict that fails to fit the settler colonial model must be made to fit."

He also shows that the idea of "settler colonialism" is "based on the same kinds of moral and political errors as earlier radical movements that appealed to idealists and intellectuals." More concerningly, Kirsch shows how the logic of "settler colonialism" results in a "longing for redemptive destruction" and produces ideologues who "preach vengeance and murder from an ivory tower."

In short, Kirsch shows how intellectually flaccid the idea of "settler colonialism" is and also the dangerous places in leads. This is a book that should be assigned in college courses along side any "settler colonialist" scholarship.

An ideology that deeply imparts a pseudo spirituality sense of virtue by those who have become mentally captured by the claims of Settler Colonialism being a unique evil needing to be eradicated. This is standard fare for Progressives and Neo-Marxists today as evidenced by all the college 'encampments' across USA. Kirsch, in a scholarly, yet accessible argument, explains the roots of the settler-colonialism theory of history and successfully undermines application of the theory to Israel-Palestine. He notes that purveyors of the theory, while castigating advanced countries like the United States, concede that even though settler-colonialsm drives the American ethos, Native Americans will not regain their lost land. The focus of the ideology, therefore, is on Israel, viewed as particularly evil and a nation whose inhabitants can be forced bro leave by "whatever means necessary." Unlike French Algerians, whom the ideology depicts as the archtypical settler-colonialists who abandoned their enterprise and property, Israelis have nowhere to go -- notwithstanding the efforts of Iran, Hamas & Hezbollah and those who waive their flags and praise 10/7 in pursuit of social justice.

The author makes salient points about the excesses of activist ideology, but he errs in not distinguishing enough between extremists who call for the dismantling of the settler nations and more nuanced thinkers like Khalidi who use “settler colonialism” in a targeted way and advocate for solutions that recognize the rights of both Palestinians and Israelis. He acknowledges the injustices against the Palestinians (along with the Israelis) and mostly seems concerned about the implications of the extreme settler colonialist view. My verdict is that a limited definition and application of the idea of settler colonialism survives his critique and should be recognized as an important and historically accurate description of what happened, for the purpose of understanding and dignifying the conflict today.

While this book is strong on the pro and con arguments (dare I say “guilt trips”) on Settler Colonialism, it is weak on significant relevant historical examples; e.g.:
1) How Post World War 2 population transfers, (which overall, made geographical borders match ethnic borders) led to stability.

Despite today’s shock and horror over this, missing from the book and worth noting are that large post WW2 population transfers have taken place regularly, be it the Ukrainians, Poles and Germans when the borders of the Ukraine were shifted westward, the Hindus and Muslims in India and Pakistan, the Croats, Serbs and Bosnians in Yugoslavia, the Greeks and Turks on Cyprus, the Czechs and Hungarians, the Rumanians and the Hungarians, … the list goes on.

2) Its history of Israel/Palestine is very weak. A MUCH better book, which was published in 1949, is: “Promise and Fulfillment - Palestine 1917-1949” by Arthur Koestler, and particularly Chapter III, The Triangle: The Conflict at the Base”. There are a lot of modern day myths of the dispossessed Arab, and a quote from this book, concerning settler colonialism is in order: “Virtually all sovereign States have come into being through some form of violent and, at the time, lawless upheaval which after a while became accepted as fait accompli. Nowhere in history - which in the time of the Migrations, the Norman Conquest, the Dutch War of Independence, or the forcible colonization of America - do we find an example of a State being peacefully born by international agreement. In this respect, again, Israel is a freak. ... The fundamental fact about Jewish colonization of Palestine is that it was carried out neither by force nor by the threat of force, but contrary to popular belief, with active Arab connivance. No Arab was ever forced to sell his land - whether it was the estate of a rich effendi, or masha'a land, i.e. the collective property of a village.

It’s worth noting that further historical facts, adding detail to the above (and running contrary to today’s popular narratives), can also be found in: “The Case for Israel” by Alan Dershowitz.

Strong overview on the topic of settler colonialism as presented from the academic world, translated into the layperson's world. It uses fairly broad strokes in most regards while leaving some history sketched, but unpainted. You'll come away with an appreciation of how 'settler colonialism' doesn't apply to modern day Israel, as presented from the academic side.

I do think it passes too briefly over many of the historical American areas of colonialism, taking too soft an approach on some of the claims of the early colonial period as much of the baggage found in settler colonialism is entrenched, anti-West activism, designed to turn out activists from Universities. To dismantle activist arguments, you need to take a sledgehammer to the foundation. As premised in the book, many arguable, popular historical takes are seemingly taken at face value and it is here where the context really matters. That being said, this is a short read so there's a not a lot of space to explore these finer details.
