Bozorgmehr Sharafedin began his journalism career in Iran, rising to editor-in-chief of the most popular youth political magazine in the country. In 2008, he left Iran for the BBC in London. He moved to Reuters in 2015, where he shared a National Press Club Award. He joined the Persian-language news service Iran International in 2023.

Yeganeh Torbati is an award-winning reporter at the New York Times with fifteen years of experience covering Iran, US national security, business and immigration. She has worked at the Washington Post, ProPublica, Reuters and the Baltimore Sun. She was part of a Reuters team that uncovered the financial empire controlled by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in 2013. The series received numerous awards, including the Gerald Loeb Award, the Overseas Press Club Award and the European Press Prize. Torbati was born in Oklahoma to Iranian immigrants.

He began his career working for various newspapers in Tehran before becoming the editor in chief of the most popular youth political magazine in Iran. He joined the BBC in London as an editor in 2008. He then became a reporter at Reuters, covering Iran’s nuclear negotiations, international sanctions, and global energy markets. In 2023, he won the National Press Club’s Edwin M. Hood Award for Diplomatic Correspondence. He is now the head of the digital news service at Iran International, a Persian-language news channel, and is based in Washington, D.C.

경제 문제도 중요하다. 호메이니는 혁명 직후 가난한 이들에게 주거, 전기, 물, 정의를 약속했다. 그러나 실제로는 혁명재단, 성직자 네트워크, 혁명수비대, 국영·준국영 기업이 거대한 이권 구조를 형성했다. 저자들은 별도의 글에서 이 책이 5년 이상 조사와 130명 이상의 취재원을 바탕으로 이란의 경제적 재난을 설명한다고 밝혔다. 그 핵심은 혁명 이후 형성된 권력-경제 결합과 부패 구조다. 이 점에서 책은 이란 문제를 “종교적 광신”만으로 설명하지 않는다. 오히려 종교 언어 뒤에 있는 물질적 이해관계, 특권경제, 폐쇄적 엘리트 지배를 드러낸다.

이 책의 강점은 첫째, 이란 현대사를 국제정치의 상투어에서 끌어낸다는 데 있다. 서구 언론에서 이란은 흔히 핵개발, 반미, 이스라엘, 제재, 테러, 중동 질서의 문제로만 소비된다. 그러나 이 책은 이란 사람들의 내부 경험을 중심에 놓는다. 문제의 주체는 미국도, 이스라엘도, 사우디도 아니라 이란 시민들이다. 이들은 혁명에 참여했고, 전쟁을 견뎠고, 개혁을 기대했고, 선거 부정을 목격했고, 감옥과 검열과 인터넷 차단 속에서도 다시 거리로 나왔다.

둘째, 책은 “반제국주의”와 “인권”을 대립시키는 단순한 구도를 거부한다. 이란 정권은 자신에 대한 비판을 자주 서구 개입이나 제국주의 음모로 몰아간다. 반대로 서구 강경파는 이란 시민의 고통을 체제전환 명분으로 이용하기도 한다. 이 책은 양쪽을 모두 경계한다. 이란 사람들의 저항은 외부가 제조한 것이 아니며, 동시에 외부 권력이 그 저항을 자기 전략에 종속시켜서도 안 된다. 이 균형감은 중요하다.

셋째, 책은 희망을 낭만화하지 않는다. 저자들이 보여주는 이란은 영웅적 저항만의 공간이 아니다. 그곳에는 피로, 감옥, 고문, 실명, 망명, 침묵, 배신, 체념도 있다. 그러나 그럼에도 저항은 사라지지 않는다. 바로 이 점에서 부제의 “Hope”가 나온다. 희망은 낙관주의가 아니다. 그것은 패배를 반복하면서도 완전히 굴복하지 않는 사회적 기억이다.

비판할 점도 있다. “도둑맞은 혁명”이라는 틀은 강력하지만, 혁명 자체의 내재적 모순을 약간 단순화할 위험이 있다. 1979년 혁명 안에는 처음부터 자유주의적 열망과 권위주의적 열망, 반제국주의와 종교적 통제, 사회정의와 도덕국가의 욕망이 뒤섞여 있었다. 그러므로 혁명이 순수했는데 나중에 배신당했다고만 말하면, 혁명 내부의 위험한 요소들이 충분히 설명되지 않을 수 있다. 혁명은 도둑맞았지만, 동시에 도둑맞을 수 있는 구조를 안에 품고 있었다.

또 하나의 한계는 이란 사회의 계급, 지방, 민족, 종교 소수자 문제를 얼마나 충분히 다루는가 하는 점이다. 여섯 인물의 서사는 읽기 쉽고 강렬하지만, 대표성의 문제가 생긴다. 쿠르드, 발루치, 아제리, 바하이, 노동계급, 농촌 지역의 경험은 현대 이란을 이해하는 데 매우 중요하다. 책이 이들을 어느 정도 포괄하더라도, 독자는 “이 여섯 명의 삶이 이란 전체를 얼마나 대표하는가”라는 질문을 유지해야 한다.

전체적으로 이 책은 현대 이란을 이해하는 데 매우 유용한 입문서이자 정치적 증언이다. 핵심 메시지는 분명하다. 이란혁명은 왕정을 무너뜨렸지만 자유를 세우지 못했다. 반서구 독립을 외쳤지만 새로운 특권층을 만들었다. 가난한 자를 위한다고 했지만 경제적 약탈 체제를 낳았다. 종교적 도덕을 말했지만 여성과 청년과 소수자를 억압했다. 그러나 그 모든 배신에도 불구하고 이란 사회는 죽지 않았다.

한 문장으로 정리하면 이렇다.
